Histon Road - Diversion and RoadworksPublished: Thursday, June 11, 2020
Histon Road will be closed to all inbound motor vehicles from 29 June as work to transform public transport, walking and cycling journeys along the road moves to the next phase.
When the entire Histon Road scheme is complete, a new bus lane and significantly improved walking and cycleways will make it quicker and easier for people to travel into the city from the A14 and villages to the north - helping to cut congestion and improve air quality.
Construction is now moving to Phase B and D, between Victoria Road and King’s Hedges Road. This period of work requires the temporary closure of Histon Road to all city-bound motor traffic for up to a year.
Phase A – the creation of a new road layout and enhanced walking and cycling links at the junction of Histon Road/Victoria Road/Huntingdon Road – is nearing completion.
Cllr Aidan Van de Weyer, Chair of the GCP’s Executive Board, said:
“Walking and cycling will play a vital role in our recovery from Covid-19, and so it is more important than ever to progress works on Histon Road to make it easier and safer for people to get around.
“This project will help more people to get out of their cars and walk, cycle, or take better public transport services to places of work and education – cutting congestion and improving the quality of the air we breathe.
“We understand the inbound road closure will be an inconvenience to the people who live in Histon Road or travel along it in the short term, and I thank people for their patience while we carry out this vital work which will significantly improve journeys in the long term.”
The road closure point will begin just south of the King’s Hedges Road junction to allow inbound traffic to access King’s Hedges Road, as well as construction and farm traffic to enter the Darwin Green site.
A diversion will be signposted and via the A14, Milton Road and Victoria Road. Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to travel both ways and residents will still be able to access their properties throughout this construction phase.
The temporary closure will impact on the inbound Citi 8 and Busway B bus routes with the Citi 8 bus being diverted via King’s Hedges and Arbury and the Busway B service via Milton Road. Both bus services will serve Histon Road outbound.
A new shuttle bus, route 8H, will be provided to compensate for the loss of inbound services on Histon Road. This will circulate from the city centre via Victoria Road to Histon Road and to Orchard Park.
