Histon Road - Gilbert Road to Huntingdon Road reopening from Friday 27 AugustPublished: Thursday, August 26, 2021
The southern section of Histon Road will be reopened tomorrow as a multi-million-pound project to improve bus and active travel journeys nears completion.
Histon Road will be reopened to all traffic between the junctions of Gilbert Road and Huntingdon Road from 6pm on Friday 27 August – with the rest of the road due to reopen later this summer.
Cyclists will enjoy safer journeys along the new cycle lanes, bus passengers will be able to use faster and more reliable services, and motorists will drive on a newly resurfaced carriageway.
It is part of a significant upgrade of Histon Road being delivered by the Greater Cambridge Partnership to improve active travel and bus journeys into the city centre from the north.
The scheme aims to cut congestion and improve journeys and air quality along Histon Road.
Cllr Neil Gough, Chair of the GCP’s Executive Board, said:
“It is good to see the first part of the upgrade to Histon Road finished and I look forward to seeing the rest of this important project completed later this summer.
“When complete, all who use Histon Road will benefit – motorists from a resurfaced carriageway, pedestrians from the improved crossing facilities, cyclists from the new cycle lanes and bus users from more reliable journeys.
“This will help to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and switch to more sustainable modes which can cut congestion, improve journeys and air quality along Histon Road.”
Work is continuing on the northern section between the junctions of Gilbert Road and Brownlow Road. Despite work pausing for seven weeks during the first Covid-19 lockdown, it is expected the entire road will be re-opened later this summer.
A diversion remains in place for inbound motorists travelling to the city from the A14. This diversion is via the A14, Milton Road and Victoria Road is signposted from the A14.
The temporary closure impacts the inbound Citi 8 and Busway B bus routes, with the Citi 8 bus being diverted via King’s Hedges and the Busway B service via Milton Road. Both bus services still serve Histon Road outbound.
With the end in sight on the Histon Road project, the GCP is advancing plans to upgrade Milton Road with work expected to begin in spring 2022.
