Swaffhams Greenway

An off-road route for cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians - is proposed to connect Swaffham Prior and Swaffham Bulbeck to Cambridge.

There is an existing walking and cycling route from Cambridge to Swaffham Prior via Stow cum Quy, Lode and Swaffham Bulbeck. However, the path has gaps and a number of sections are of poor quality.

The options for the new route are still being developed but are likely to follow the B1102 from Fen Ditton up to Swaffham Bulbeck and Swaffham Prior. Alternatively, a route following a parallel disused railway line is also being investigated.

The proposals include new sections of path and improvements to the existing route. A new Greenway will enable residents of the Swaffhams to visit key destinations and employment areas, such as Marshalls, Cambridge Airport and Cambridge North.

Proposed route

Please note that the route and features of a Swaffhams Greenway is not finalised and we are currently refining the proposals to include community feedback.

  • The route starts in central Cambridge alongside the river and shares an alignment with the Horningsea and Swaffhams Greenways as far as Fen Ditton.
  • The Bottisham and Swaffhams Greenway share the same route out of Cambridge before the A14 junction near Stow cum Quy.
  • The Greenways then split into individual routes with the Swaffhams and Bottisham Greenway following the B1102 and A1303 respectively.
  • The Swaffhams route then follows the B1102 and goes through the villages of Lode, Swaffham Bulbeck and finishes at Swaffham Prior.
  • Alternatively a different route alignment has been suggested that follows Low Fen Drove way, utilising the bridge over the A14 before joining the route of a disused railway line north of Anglesea Abbey, past Lode and onward towards the Swaffhams using small local roads.

Key features

  • Create new 2.2km off-road route between Stow cum Quy and Lode.
  • Build new 1km off-road route through Stow cum Quy.
  • Construct new 500m off-road route through Swaffham Bulbeck.
  • Upgrade existing cycling/walking path and sections of poor quality between Lode and Swaffham Prior.
  • Improve route through Newmarket Road Park & Ride site and near the Ditton Lane/ Fison Road junction.
  • Alternatively, a new 3m wide route following the disused railway alignment is being investigated prior to consultation.

Get involved

We spoke to the local community about potential options and to gather feedback earlier this year. We are now analysing this feedback and working up options. We will be consulting on proposals for a Swaffhams Greenway in 2019.
