Safer walking, wheeling and cycling for Barton, Grantchester and Cambridge.

  • The greenway will see improvements made to paths used by local school children going to and from Barton Primary School.
  • It will provide better connections to places like Burwash Manor and a link to the Comberton Greenway.
  • We'll also provide new landscaping and planting in the village to enhance the local environment.

Where we are

Executive Board

Our Executive Board met on Thursday 5 March 2026. The Board has made the decision to further review the Baulk Path, this will be discussed at the next Executive Board meeting. For further information, you can view each of the papers that were discussed at the Executive Board.

Barton Road (A603) improvements

Work on Barton Road has been completed. The shared use path is now fully complete and open to public use.

The scheme runs from the A603/M11 roundabout to the Barton Road lay-by and includes:

  • better drainage, ensuring the route can be used year round.
  • improved segregation between the path and the road to improve safety .
  • creating a wider, smoother, shared use path.
  • a slower, safer speed limit for vehicles travelling along Barton Road.

Barton Village

In Barton village, we’re delivering improvements designed to make day-to-day journeys easier by:

  • Making walking and cycling safer for everyone, including children, families, and older residents.

  • Improving visibility with better lighting.

  • Increasing comfort and safety for more vulnerable pedestrians with smoother pavements and crossings.

  • Reducing speeding by introducing a 20mph speed limit.

This section of the Barton Greenway has largely been completed. At the end of March/beginning of April, our contractors will finish the remaining elements. This will include:

  • Completing the new parallel crossing at Burwash Manor.

  • Adding the remaining white lining to New Road and Comberton Road.

  • Play logs for the community are on order and will be installed near to the village pond.

  • A new streetlight will also be installed at the bus stop next to Kings Grove. This will likely require temporary traffic lights. We do not expect to have to close any roads to complete the programme.

We would like to thank everyone from the local community for their patience as work in Barton village is completed.

Overall, our works in Barton village will deliver:

  • Improved drainage to help keep the carriageway safe.

  • Upgraded street lighting.

  • New features such as speed humps and raised table junctions to complement the extension of the 20mph speed limit throughout the village, making roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Resurfaced paths and roads.

  • A new crossing to make journeys safer.

  • Improved landscaping.
