Safer walking, wheeling and cycling for Barton, Grantchester and Cambridge.

  • The greenway will see improvements made to paths used by local school children going to and from Barton Primary School.
  • It will provide better connections to places like Burwash Manor and a link to the Comberton Greenway.
  • We'll also provide new landscaping and planting in the village to enhance the local environment.

Barton village

Work to widen the footway, improve signage and upgrade street lighting is underway in Barton as part of our work to introduce safer crossings and traffic calming.

We’re delivering improvements designed to make day-to-day journeys easier by:

  • Making walking and cycling safer for everyone, including children, families, and older residents
  • Improving visibility with better lighting
  • Increasing comfort and safety for more vulnerable pedestrians with smoother pavements and crossings
  • Reducing speeding by introducing a 20mph speed limit throughout the village

Current works include:

  • Kings Grove / New Road – works are expected to last approximately six to seven weeks with multiway traffic lights
  • Comberton Road –works should last for approximately four to five weeks. We will use a number of traffic management types such as multiway traffic lights and a road closure. This will run the same time as the works on Kings Grove/New Road, meaning there will be two sets of traffic lights across late September. There will be three-way lights on Kings Grove/New Road and two-way lights on Comberton Road.
  • Working hours for both are 8am–6pm

We would like to thank everyone from the local community, businesses and parish council for their patience as work on the Barton Greenway continues.

Overall, our works in Barton village will deliver:

  • improved drainage to help keep the carriageway safe
  • upgraded street lighting
  • new features such as speed humps and raised table junctions to complement the extension of the 20mph speed limit throughout the village, making roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists
  • resurfaced paths and roads
  • a new crossing to make journeys safer
  • improved landscaping in the centre of the village and vegetation clearance making walkways easier to navigate
  • new landscaping with wildflowers and trees along High Street/School Lane/New Road will provide a green space for the community. You will still be able to continue your journeys via High Street/Comberton Road/New Road.

Barton Road (A603) improvements

Works on Barton Road started on Monday 11 August and will last for around 21 weeks. The road remains open during the day, with night-time closures (8pm–6am) and a signed diversion route in place each night.

A temporary footway has been installed to safely divert pedestrians and cyclists while works are ongoing on the main pathway.

The scheme runs from the A603/M11 roundabout to the Barton Road lay-by, including a safer, wider path for pedestrians and cyclists, better drainage, and a reduced speed limit.
Access to properties will be maintained.

The official diversion can be viewed below. During the day, the road will be re-opened with a speed restriction and temporary traffic lights in place to enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross at specific locations (push button lights). The diversion route has been selected so that it is suitable for all vehicles, including HGVs, along roads that are designed for higher volumes of traffic to ensure vehicles are able to flow freely.

Once completed, the improvements will:
• Widen the shared-use footway to create a safer space for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility aid users
• Improve drainage to help prevent water pooling, which will help ensure paths stay usable year-round
• Create better segregation between the path and the road to improve safety
• Introduce a slower, safer speed limit for vehicles travelling along Barton Road.
