GW comberton

Safer travel for Comberton, Hardwick, Coton and Cambridge.

Safer walking, wheeling and cycling between Cambridge and the western villages of Comberton, Hardwick, Coton.

The greenway will make it safer and easier to reach Cambridge University West Campus, the Sidgwick site and Newnham. As well as better access to Comberton Village College and Long Road Sixth Form.

Where we are

Adams Road

The Adams Road section of the Comberton Greenway runs from Grange Road to Wilberforce Road junction. Already used by up to 3,000 cyclists daily, Adams Road will become England’s first Cycle Street.

Daytime road closures are in place between Wilberforce Road, Stacey Lane and Sylvester Road. Access through Wilberforce Road/Adams Road junction for residents and users of the sports facilities during working hours will be permitted, with controlled access through the closure. Outside of working hours, temporary traffic signals will be used as required, particularly at weekends when higher numbers of people are expected at the sports facilities. No parking has been implemented along the entirety of Adams Road with double yellow lines. To improve safety by creating more space along the footways.

Following completion of our works, a limited number or marked parking bays will be installed. These bays will likely be included as part of the ‘Wilberforce areas residents'’ parking scheme. For more information about this scheme, please visit the project page.

The removal of most of the on-street parking will improve safety and user-friendly conditions for pedestrians by creating more space along the footways whilst providing additional planting.

Vegetation clearance of existing hedgerows and tree branches extending onto the highway has commenced.

The works on Adams Road will involve altering the existing road layout by widening both sides of the footways to ensure there is appropriate room for pedestrians. As part of the new layout, cyclists will have priority over motor vehicles. All footways and the entire road will be resurfaced with planting areas along the road’s edge and the required drainage added.

The improvement of the existing signalised junction of Grange Road, a new raised table junction at Adams Road/Slyvester Road and new uncontrolled crossings on Adams Road are included in the project.

During works, there will be closure points at each end of Adams Road, and access for residents. However, residents may need to come through a particular end of the road depending on the stage of works. Signage will be in place if this is the case.

We would like to thank the residents of Adams Road for their patience.

The works are anticipated to take approximately 30 weeks. To minimise disruption, works will be completed in two halves, with daytime road closures in place and access maintained for residents.

Coton village

Construction commenced in September starting with The Footpath, Plough/High Street junction and Whitwell Way. Works on The Footpath and High Street junction will take place between 7.30am - 5.30pm with access for residents to be maintained by three-way temporary traffic lights. Works on Whitwell Way will take place between 9.30am - 3.30pm with two-way traffic lights in operation between these times. Footway closures with push-button crossings will be in place 24/7. The remaining works will be completed later in the programme.

Works to resurface The Footpath are taking place between Monday 17 November and Friday 21 November, between 9.30am and 3.30pm. During these times, The Footpath will be closed, and vehicle access will not be permitted.

To facilitate these works, we’ve asked residents to ensure their vehicles are parked within private driveways during working hours, to allow safe access for construction machinery and personnel. A pedestrian and cyclist diversion will be in place via Coton Park. Pedestrian access to all properties and businesses will be maintained throughout the works.

Between Monday 24 November and Friday 28 November 2025, works will be taking place to resurface the junction of Cambridge Road and High Street, and a section of Whitwell Way between properties 1-9. Work will take place overnight, between 8pm and 6am.

To facilitate these works, we’ve asked residents to ensure their vehicles are parked within private driveways during working hours. Vehicle access will be maintained for residents throughout the works but delays of up to 15 minutes should be expected. Pedestrian access to all properties and businesses will be maintained throughout the works

Should residents require use of their cars during these works, we have advised that they make alternative parking arrangements.  Emergency access will be maintained throughout the works.

Excavation, kerbing and tarmacking has been completed outside The Plough Public house. At the High Street junction, work is underway to prepare for the new formalised give way junction. Additional signage has been placed at the village entrance to remind visitors that businesses remain open as usual.

Works in the village include: street lighting upgrades, road resurfacing, redesigned junctions, footway improvement works and raised traffic-calming features to improve safety and visibility. Additional drainage and landscaping are also planned to accommodate the main works.

Two raised tables, similar to those being installed in Barton village, will be introduced at the junction in the centre of the village (High Street/Cambridge Road) and outside Coton primary school as traffic calming measures to slow vehicle speeds. This will ensure parents and children will be able to cross safely at school drop-off and pickups.

Works will take approximately 15 weeks. Most activity will take place during the day under temporary traffic management with access maintained as required, with some night-time closures for surfacing and road marking to minimise the impact to residents. Residents will receive advance notice of any road closures.

How we got here

We first consulted on the route spring 2019 with further engagement on our updated plans in summer 2022. Our decision-makers on the Executive Board agreed to proceed in December 2022 with some changes in response. These are summarised in the You Said We Did report.

Route Overview

Starting in Comberton, the route heads north on Long Road and continues towards Coton. It then goes over the M11 bridge and carries on past the Cambridge University West Campus. A new link branches off towards Barton Road before the path continues along Adams Road, Grange Road, Sidgwick Avenue and before reaching Silver Street.
