Safer walking, wheeling and cycling between Cambridge and the western villages of Comberton, Hardwick, Coton.
The greenway will make it safer and easier to reach Cambridge University West Campus, the Sidgwick site and Newnham. As well as better access to Comberton Village College and Long Road Sixth Form.
Where we are
Adams Road
One of the main routes for cyclists heading into Cambridge is set to be transformed as works begin on Adams Road this summer as part of the Comberton Greenway. Already used by more than 3,000 cyclists daily, Adams Road will become England’s first Cycle Street, making the route safer for all users. Rain gardens will be planted along the roadside to help with drainage and enhance the streetscape, while pedestrians will benefit from wider pavements and cyclists will have priority over motor vehicles. This is a development which has been welcomed by local residents.
Improvement works are planned for Adams Road, between Grange Road and Wilberforce Road. The scheme will widen footpaths, narrow the road to prioritise cyclists, remove most on-street parking (with limited bays retained), and resurface the entire road and pavement. Drainage upgrades, new planting areas, and improvements to the Grange Road junction are also included.
Works are expected to begin this summer, lasting around 24 weeks, pending final approvals. To minimise disruption, works will be completed in two phases, with daytime road closures in place and access maintained for residents.
Coton village
Planned improvements in Coton village include key areas such as the footpath, the junction by the Plough Public House, High Street/Cambridge Road, and Whitewell Way near the primary school.
Works will include street lighting upgrades, resurfacing, redesigned junctions, and raised traffic-calming features to improve safety and visibility. Additional drainage, landscaping, and fencing improvements are also planned.
Works will take approximately 15 weeks. Most activity will take place during the day under temporary traffic management, with some night-time closures for surfacing and road marking.
How we got here
We first consulted on the route spring 2019 with further engagement on our updated plans in summer 2022. Our decision-makers on the Executive Board agreed to proceed in December 2022 with some changes in response. These are summarised in the You Said We Did report.
Route Overview
Starting in Comberton, the route heads north on Long Road and continues towards Coton. It then goes over the M11 bridge and carries on past the Cambridge University West Campus. A new link branches off towards Barton Road before the path continues along Adams Road, Grange Road, Sidgwick Avenue and before reaching Silver Street.
