Safer walking, wheeling and cycling between Cambridge and the western villages of Comberton, Hardwick, Coton.
The greenway will make it safer and easier to reach Cambridge University West Campus, the Sidgwick site and Newnham. As well as better access to Comberton Village College and Long Road Sixth Form.
Where we are
Adams Road
The Adams Road section of the Comberton Greenway runs from Grange Road to Wilberforce Road junction. Already used by up to 3,000 cyclists daily, Adams Road will become England’s first Cycle Street.
A compound has been set up in the area to the north-west of Wilberforce/Adams Road junction.
Daytime road closures are in place between Wilberforce Road, Stacey Lane and Sylvester Road. Access through Wilberforce/Adams junction for resident and users of the sports facilities during working hours will be permitted with controlled access through the road closure. Outside of working hours, temporary traffic signals will be used as required, particularly at weekends when large volumes of people are expected at the sports facilities. We have introduced double yellow road markings along the whole road during the construction phase to improve safety by creating more space along the footways.
Works are underway on the northern side of Adams Road between Wilberforce and Sylvester Road where the existing footways have been excavated as part of the site clearance and for new kerb lines.
Some additional works have been required to reconstruct the existing footways and driveway areas where the original construction was not up to standard. New edgings at the back of the footway, in front of hedge lines and across driveways have been added to our package of works.
Following completion of our works, a limited number of marked parking bays will be installed. These bays will likely be included as part of the ‘Wilberforce areas residents'’ parking scheme. For more information about this scheme, please visit our project page.
The removal of most of the on-street parking will improve safety and make the road far more user friendly for pedestrians by creating more space along the footways whilst providing additional planting.
The works on Adams Road will involve altering the existing road layout by widening both sides of the footways to ensure there is appropriate room for pedestrians. As part of the new layout, cyclists will have priority over motor vehicles. All footways and the entire road will be resurfaced with planting areas along the road’s edge and the required drainage added.
The improvement of the existing signalised junction of Grange Road, a new raised table junction at Adams Road/Sylvester Road and new uncontrolled crossings on Adams Road are included in the project.
During works there will be closure points at each end of Adams Road, access for residents will remain, however residents may be expected to come through a particular end depending on the stage of works. Signage will be in place if this is the case.
The works are anticipated to take approximately 30 weeks. To minimise disruption, works will be completed in two halves, with daytime road closures in place and access maintained for residents.
We would like to thank the residents of Adams Road for their patience.
Coton village
Construction in Coton village commenced in September.
Excavation, kerbing and tarmac surfacing has been completed outside The Plough public house and Whitwell Way. At the Cambridge Road junction drainage works and the installation of kerbing is underway. After this has been completed, the path will be resurfaced. Three-way temporary traffic lights are in place. At the High Street junction, excavation is underway in preparation for the introduction of a new formalised give way junction. Signage has been placed at the village entrance to show that businesses remain open as usual.
Works in the village include street lighting upgrades, carriageway resurfacing, redesigned junctions, footway improvement works and raised traffic-calming features to improve safety and visibility. Additional drainage and landscaping are also planned to accommodate the main works.
Two raised table junctions, similar to those being installed in Barton village, will be introduced at the junction in the centre of the village (High Street/Cambridge Road) and outside Coton primary school as traffic calming measures to slow vehicle speeds. This will ensure parents and children will be able to cross safely at school drop-off and pickups while pedestrians and cyclists can cross the junctions at other times.
Works will take approximately 15 weeks. Most activity will take place during the day under temporary traffic management with access maintained as required, with some night-time closures for surfacing and road marking to minimise the impact to residents. Residents will receive advance notice of any road closures.
How we got here
We first consulted on the route spring 2019 with further engagement on our updated plans in summer 2022. Our decision-makers on the Executive Board agreed to proceed in December 2022 with some changes in response. These are summarised in the You Said We Did report.
Route Overview
Starting in Comberton, the route heads north on Long Road and continues towards Coton. It then goes over the M11 bridge and carries on past the Cambridge University West Campus. A new link branches off towards Barton Road before the path continues along Adams Road, Grange Road, Sidgwick Avenue and before reaching Silver Street.
