GW melbourn

Safer and easier travel for Melbourn, Meldreth, Shepreth, Foxton and Hauxton: better connecting people to jobs, schools, services and opportunities along the A10 with wider paths, better crossings and safer 20mph streets.

Where we are

Current construction work – Shepreth

Works on the Shepreth section of the Melbourn Greenway began on Monday 11 May. Angle Lane and Fowlmere Road will be resurfaced, with new markings added as part of this first phase of works.

Temporary road closures and diversions

Fowlmere Road and Angle Lane overnight closures have been rescheduled with further information to follow regarding new dates.

Starting June 1, Station Road, Shepreth is closed to vehicles at the level crossing, preventing vehicle access to and from Barrington Road. The closure is required for safety due to the proximity of works to the level crossing.

Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained, and access will remain for residents at Docwra’s Close and for people accessing Shepreth railway station, Shepreth Wildlife Park and local businesses. The remainder of Station Road will stay open, but parking will be suspended to maintain traffic flow. The official diversion route is supplied below and will be clearly signposted.

How we got here

We first consulted the public on plans for the greenway in summer 2019, which saw further work on the route approved by our decision-making board in June 2020.

In autumn 2022 we promoted updated plans to the public for feedback. Leaflets were delivered to 6,000 households and businesses with an online webinar and two drop-in events anyone could attend. People could submit comments online, over the phone or via the post.

Following this in March 2023, our board agreed to progress with the route. Some changes in response to public feedback are set out in the You Said, We Did report.

The  Shepreth Spur will include:

  • A new crossing outside Shepreth Village Hall.
  • New raised tables on Fowlmere Road at the junctions with Meldreth Road, Angle Lane and Barron’s Green.
  • The addition of double yellow lines along Station Road.
  • Introduction of a 20mph speed limit starting at the Barron’s Green and Fowlmere Road junction through to the railway station.
  • Traffic calming measures, such as speed humps and a 30mph limit added on Fowlmere Road between Barron’s Green and the A10.
  • Street lighting throughout Shepreth will also be upgraded.
