Waterbeach Greenway

A safer route between Waterbeach, Milton and Cambridge North.

Linking homes, schools and businesses in Waterbeach, Milton and northern Cambridge and joining up to the Chisholm Trail, Milton Road, Railway stations and Park and Rides for onward journeys.

Where we are

Updated designs for the Milton section of the Waterbeach Greenway have been developed following feedback from the 2023 consultation. Meanwhile, the northern section between Waterbeach and Ely Road has progressed to the next design stage, with detailed design work due to begin soon, reflecting the support received during the 2023 consultation.

The next phase will focus on engagement with residents and stakeholders. Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (WWCT) has been appointed to lead independent engagement on the revised proposals for the section through Milton, alongside wider engagement with residents in Waterbeach on the latest designs for the northern section of the route.

If you have any questions about the engagement process, please contact Walk Wheel Cycle Trust by email (MiltonVillage@walkwheelcycletrust.org.uk) or call 01223 699906 to request a callback. For all other Waterbeach Greenways queries, please continue to contact us using the details on our get in touch page.

Cowley Road improvements

Work to create a new segregated cycle track and footway along the Cowley Road section of the Waterbeach Greenway is now complete.

The shared path has been significantly widened to create a new 4-metre-wide cycleway, with space for people to walk and cycle in both directions. Pedestrians also benefit from a new raised crossing opposite the entrance to St John’s Innovation Park – giving walkers and cyclists priority crossing for the first time on this part of Cowley Road.

We spoke to residents, local councillors and those who work nearby about how our changes have made a difference to travel in the north of Cambridge. Find out more here: Cowley Road improvements.

Route overview

The revised 5.5km greenway alignment would start on Cambridge Road in Waterbeach before using a new, off-road path along land behind Car Dyke Road. It would then continue along a new, off-road bridleway, through fields behind the A10 as far as Ely Road, where it would then continue through Milton village. From here it would use the Jane Coston Bridge over the A14 and join upgraded paths and cycle-tracks on Cowley Road on to Cambridge North railway station and the Chisholm Trail.
