Barton greenway continues to move forward

Published 10 June 2025

In papers published this week for the Greater Cambridgeshire Partnership (GCP) Joint Assembly, the latest developments on the plans for Barton Greenway are to be discussed.

The route from Barton to Cambridge, which will be used by thousands of people walking and cycling a week, has been developed into a full business case and is currently going through the planning process with Cambridgeshire County Council.

Thomas Fitzpatrick, head of programme at the GCP said: “Barton Greenway is a 8km route which will make a real difference to anyone walking, cycling or using other active travel routes to and from Cambridge. Our aim – as with all our greenways – is to give people choice in how they travel. We are making it safer for people to walk and cycle and for anyone driving. With more people opting to travel by sustainable means, there will be less cars on the roads freeing up road space for those who need it

“Ahead of the full business case approval, we have been carrying out early works in Barton since the spring and we would like to thank everyone from the local community, businesses and the parish council for their patience as this work has continued. We know it can be very inconvenient to have road works happening near your home and business, so their understanding has been greatly appreciated. Once we have finished on New Road, works will begin around the junction of Kings Grove and at the New Road/High Street/School Lane junction.”

The Barton Greenway starts in Barton and joins the B1046 New Road before joining the north side of the A603 Cambridge Road and Haggis Farm Interchange and crossing over the M11, continuing along Barton Road and ending at Newnham Croft, where there are convenient links into and around Cambridge. There is also an off road route which routes via the Baulk Path, with connections to the Haslingfield Greenway.
