Construction to improve highways and footpaths in Coton village are due to begin on 29 September 2025.

These works form part of the Comberton Greenway, which is being delivered by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) to make it safer and easier to travel between Cambridge, Coton, Hardwick and Comberton on foot or by bike.

The scheme in Coton includes upgrades to street lighting, highway and footpath resurfacing, redesigned junctions and raised traffic-calming features.

Improvements will take place on the junction by the Plough Public House, The Footpath, High Street/Cambridge Road, and Whitwell Way near Coton Church of England primary school.

Thomas Fitzpatrick, head of programme at the GCP said:

“Upgrades to the transport routes in Coton – like much of Greater Cambridge – are much needed and the greenways programme means these improvements can now be delivered. The changes will make a real difference to people living in the village by reducing traffic speeds and making it safer to move around the village on foot or by bicycle.

“For these improvements to become a reality, there will be some temporary disruption while construction takes place. I would like to thank the community for their patience while we undertake these works and apologise for any inconvenience caused. To reassure residents in Coton and the surrounding areas, we have carefully planned the construction programme to ensure these improvements can be constructed in a way that reduces negative impacts on Coton residents as much as possible.”

Work will begin on The Footpath, Plough/High Street junction and Whitwell Way – and these works will be delivered at the same time. The remaining works will be completed later in the programme and residents will receive advance notice of any road closures and diversions.

Works outside The Plough Public house will introduce a new ‘give way’ junction and new landscaping.

At the junction in the centre of the village, a new raised table – similar to those being installed in Barton village – will be installed, which will encourage slower vehicle speeds, making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross, including parents and children at school drop-offs and pick-ups.

Additional drainage, landscaping and fencing improvements are also planned.

Also starting in the next few weeks as part of the Comberton Greenway will be construction on Adams Road – one of Cambridge’s busiest cycle routes. Under the

new scheme, the street will become England’s first Cycle Street, making it safer for up to 3000 plus cyclists that use it each day as well as other road users and pedestrians who navigate the road and pavements. Further details on the project will be shared in the coming weeks.
