A new busway, travel hub and walking and cycling route to improve people’s journeys to Cambridge from growing communities to the south east has been given the green light today.

Cambridgeshire County Council’s Full Council today agreed to submit a Transport and Works Act Order to the government for phase two of the Cambridge South East Transport project.

The project will connect communities along the route to Cambridge and the new Cambridge South Station, as well as giving commuters easy access to the Biomedical Campus, Granta Park and Babraham Research Campus. The dedicated CSET busway with adjoining walking and cycling path would give people more travel choices, making it quicker, easier and reliable to get to where people need to go. The new travel hub near the A11 and A1307 would be in easy reach of people coming to Cambridge from the east and south.

Cllr Elisa Meschini, Chair of the GCP’s Executive Board, said:

“It’s great that this well-overdue project is progressing. The Cambridge South East Transport project will be vital for the delivery and success of the new children's and cancer hospitals. Sustainable transport solutions are needed to enable access to the crucial, life-saving work being carried out in our great city and giving people greater travel choices to enable them to get to work, school or to meet friends.”

At their meeting, county councillors considered the CSET proposals in detail, with representations made by members of the public and major employers in the area.

The Transport and Works Act Order application is expected to be submitted to the Department for Transport this winter. It’s likely that a public inquiry will be called following the submission.

In early 2024, the former government announced in the Budget that £7.2 million was to be spent on progression of the CSETS Transport & Works Act Order (TWAO) application and linked sustainable and active travel improvements to ensure the Cambridge Biomedical Campus has the right public transport links.
