Construction update February 2024

Welcome to our February update on the construction of the Greater Cambridge greenways, our twelve walking, wheeling, cycling and, where possible, equestrian routes to better connect the city to the communities around it.

Despite the storms in January, works have progressed well while vital site investigation works have taken place.

Horningsea Greenway

Horningsea Feb update

Progress summary

At the start of the month, we took part in a Fen Ditton Primary School assembly to tell them about what we’ll be doing outside their school, the types of work we do and the different jobs in engineering.

We’ve been working near the primary school since Wednesday 3 January. Footway closures, traffic management and speed restrictions are in place while we dig down to rebuild the path’s foundations. We’ve also had to cover electricity and telecoms wires, gas and water pipes with concrete to protect them while we’ve added kerb edging along the pathway.

Once complete, students at Fen Ditton Primary school will be able to walk, wheel or cycle on the newly improved path. Together with the road’s safer speed limits it will provide a safer off-road way to get to school.

What’s next

Our works will temporarily pause while Cambridgeshire County Council make planned repairs to footpaths in Horningsea village. Where possible, we try to include our works alongside other highway improvements to minimise the impact on residents. However, this is not always possible depending on the work needed. In these cases, it is important that the need for road space is evenly shared.

We will then finish widening the path and resurface and reline the length of the path from Horningsea all the way to Fen Ditton, including the bridge over the A14.

Lastly, we’ll install the traffic islands within Horningsea village.

Our programme for this area is under constant review to ensure we minimise the length and impact of the works.

The full design drawings for the Horningsea Road are available on our website.

Comberton Greenway

Comberton Greenway Feb

Progress summary

After approval from our executive board, work is underway on the next phase of the Comberton Greenway at the Kentings and Barrons Way junctions.

Both will see pedestrian improvements such as tactile paving (the bumps to support people who are blind or partially sighted) and shorter walking distances to cross the junction.

This will also slow drivers down who are turning at these junctions - creating a safer environment for everyone.

Both junctions will be resurfaced, and we will install new street lighting and a raised table at each junction with road markings. We will build the new tables during overnight works, which will take five nights to complete starting on Wednesday 7 February. During this time, there will be road closures with local diversions and traffic lights on the B1046. Access will be maintained using Kentings or Barrons Way at all times.

More information will be distributed to affected residents and warning signs with dates and times will be put out ahead of the night works starting.

What’s next

Once the Kentings and Barrons Way junctions are finished, works will progress onto the four-way B1046/South Street/Green End junction then through the village with the aim to finish by mid-July.

The full design drawings for Comberton are available on our website.

Upcoming greenway projects

Heading further into 2024, there will be more sections of our greenways delivered. Anyone immediately affected by our works will be notified in advance.

Melbourn Greenway: we are reviewing public feedback on plans for Foxton. More information on the works and design drawings are available on our website. We are looking to improve the footpath between Melbourn and Meldreth Station. We will also be working on the link to Shepreth station from the A10.

Barton Greenway: we are looking to start work to widen the shared use path on the Barton Road from the Haggis Farm interchange towards the city.

Sawston Greenway: we are developing traffic calming proposals in Stapleford, which could be the first part of the Sawston Greenway to begin.

Waterbeach Greenway: we are planning for the upgrade of Cowley Road this spring, improving the cycleway from Milton Road junction to the A14 pedestrian bridge (Jane Coston Bridge). This section was approved after a consultation in 2019 and an update featured in our recent consultation. We are currently analysing the feedback on our proposals for the rest of the greenway.
