Construction update - January 2024

Happy New Year and welcome to our January update on construction of the Greater Cambridge greenways – our programme of 12 walking, wheeling, cycling and, where possible, equestrian routes to better connect the city to the communities around it.

Early works have now resumed following the Christmas embargo, with work on other greenways due to start in the coming months.

A safer path for walking and cycling along the Horningsea Road will be resurfaced in late January

Progress summary

Small scale works on the Horningsea Greenway were continued in the village during December, where signposts were installed to carry future signs. We aim to return to the village later in February to install the traffic islands and associated road markings.

Early works on the Horningsea Road resumed on Monday 2 January at the Fen Ditton end, near the primary school.

Looking ahead / what’s next

We’re aiming to complete this section of the greenway towards the end of January, subject to any unforeseen circumstances. Once complete here we will resurface the full-length of the newly widened path from Horningsea Village all the way to Fen Ditton, including the bridge over the A14.

We are aware of the queues building up around the works between the A14 and Fen Ditton in November, and to help ease the congestion we put extra measures in place, such as traffic management controls, kept staff on site longer and reducing the length of the lane closure where possible. Temporary traffic lights on the A14 bridge will only be in place from 9:30am – 3:30pm.

Our works programme for this area is under constant review to ensure we minimise the duration and subsequent impact the works will have.

We would like to thank the public for their patience and apologise for any disruption caused by these works.

Comberton Greenway

A new crossing is open for students and the community to use at Comberton Village College

Progress summary

Works have progressed well on Comberton Greenway, and we completed a new pedestrian and cycle crossing directly opposite Comberton Village College in December. The new crossing incorporates a widened footpath, additional lighting for safety and drainage to accommodate the raised crossing table. The crossing is now open for students and the community to use.

The recent overnight road closures enabled us to complete the crossing with a new surface and road markings. This also included resurfacing of junctions outside the village college.

We’ve really appreciated the understanding and cooperation of residents, organisations and businesses in this busy area, which has helped us to deliver the works safely.

Looking ahead / what’s next.

Following the GCP Executive Board’s decisions on Thursday 4 January, the team will progress onto the junctions of Kentings and Barrons Way. The works will include narrowing the junctions by widening the pavements. This reduces the distance people must walk and supports drivers to slow down when turning. There will be additional works to improve drainage as well as install speed tables and street lighting - all helping to improve road safety. We’ll provide further details on these works in February’s construction update.

Upcoming greenway projects

Early 2024 is set to be busy and communications will be delivered to affected residents in advance to confirm works are starting. We are looking to start work to widen the shared use path on the Barton Road between the Haggis Farm interchange working towards Newnham. On the Melbourn Greenway, we are aiming to install traffic-calming measures in Foxton then Shepreth. Later, we’re aiming to do the same in Stapleford on the Sawston Greenway. In the north, our team are aiming to move onto works on Fen Ditton High Street on the Horningsea Greenway.

By March, works to create a new section of the Linton Greenway at the Abington's - from Bourn Bridge Road to Granta Park - are planned to commence. We hope to start improving the links to Meldreth Railway Station and begin upgrades to Cowley Road on the Waterbeach Greenway. Communications will be delivered to affected residents in advance of works starting.
