Greater Cambridge greenways construction update November 2023

Welcome to our second update on construction of the Greater Cambridge greenways – our programme of 12 walking, cycling, wheeling and, where appropriate, equestrian routes to better connect the city to the communities around it.

Early works on greenways started with the Horningsea Greenway this summer. We recently started on the Comberton Greenway and further early works on other greenways are due in the New Year, which will be included in future updates.

Progress summary

Works on the Horningsea Greenway have been progressing well. We now have around half of the shared use path widening completed from the Horningsea village end heading towards Fen Ditton. The final surfacing of all sections will be completed at the end of construction.

The works towards Fen Ditton southside started on Monday 23 October. We have recently opened a 400m stretch of pathway north of the A14. Initial works up to the A14 from Horningsea were partially completed at the end of October, with just the final layer of asphalt to be laid at the end of the project. Works will now progress over the A14 and into Fen Ditton village, finishing outside the primary school.

The newly widened sections of pathway still require the final layer of asphalt to be laid before work on these sections is completed. Full width resurfacing will be completed along all sections towards the end of the project.

Looking ahead / what’s next

The next stage of the works will be A14 heading south to the boundary of Fen Ditton.

We’ll soon be carrying out further works at Horningsea village end to install the new streetlight ducting that will link from the garden centre to near the cemetery; it’s expected that this will be completed in the next few weeks. Street light columns will be installed later this year.

Resurfacing to the existing section of path on the bridge over the A14 is scheduled for early next year.

Comberton Greenway

Comberton works

On Monday 23 October we started early works on the Comberton Greenway.

The works will provide a new crossing outside Comberton Village College. This work will be progressed whilst we review and work to resolve responses to the Traffic Regulation Order for the rest of the village scheme.

Upcoming early works

Road works

Early works on other greenways are due to start in the New Year. We will provide updates in future monthly construction updates.
