Welcome to our greenways construction update, which tracks our work as we build the 12 routes to make walking and cycling in Greater Cambridge safer and easier.

August marked the start of a package of early works, starting with the Horningsea Greenway. Further early works on other greenway routes will start before the end of the year and will be included as part of this monthly update on works currently under construction.

Horningsea Greenway

update1

Works on the Horningsea Greenway have been progressing well. We now have around 20% of the shared use path widening completed from the Horningsea village end heading towards Fen Ditton. Works up to the A14 from Horningsea are on course to be completed for the end of October. Works will then progress over the A14 and into Fen Ditton village, finishing outside the primary school.

update3

The works have been divided into seven phases, so the flow of traffic through the temporary traffic signals can be maintained. So far, we have made good progress on two of seven phases:

  • The first 250m of path widening has now been largely completed.
  • The next phase of 250m is also largely complete. This consisted of widening the existing path and earthworks along the rear embankment to support the construction.

For both phases, the remaining works consist of adding surface course asphalt to the pathway, and installing solar studs and road markings. As with all phases of works, there will be a suitable pathway diversion in place whilst the remaining works are underway.

Progress has been good but there is still lots of work to do. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to widen and construct the new sections of path heading towards the A14 junction. Works will then move over to the Fen Ditton side of the A14. Resurfacing to the existing section of path on the bridge over the A14 is scheduled for early next year.

We’re due to start early works on the Haslingfield Greenway at the junction of Grantchester Road and Barton Road and down Grantchester Road to Cambridge Rugby Club in October 2023. This will provide an improved and more direct crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as improved cycleways and pavements around the crossing. There will be drainage and traffic signal upgrades, landscaping (including additional trees and planting) and resurfacing of the carriageway. The works should be complete in March 2024.

We’ve been speaking with local councillors and directly impacted residents over the last few weeks and letters have been delivered to addresses in the area to let them know what to expect.

Cambridgeshire County Council has recently advertised two Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) for Sidgwick Avenue and for Comberton village, which are part of the Comberton Greenway. There is now a process to be undertaken to look at the objections to the TROs and work to review and resolve these. We hope to start early works on the Comberton Greenway before the end of the year.

There will be an update on progress with the Haslingfield Greenway and Comberton Greenway early works in the next newsletter.
