Milton Road update: July 2024

Published 06 August 2024

The Milton Road project aims to improve public transport, cycling and walking infrastructure to make these sustainable travel options a more attractive alternative to the car.

We’ve been making excellent progress as we move towards the final stages of the project. Many sections of the scheme are now open for public use, with many more set to be finished next month.

Ongoing overnight works

We’re now looking to undertake further overnight works in late July and August.

We’re currently carrying out preparatory works for road surfacing between Cook Close and the Guided Busway. These works started on Monday 22 July, and are expected to last for two weeks until early August. They are taking place between the hours of 8pm and 6am.

To facilitate the preparation works, we are restricting traffic through the King’s Hedges junction. This is so we can build traffic islands and complete the necessary works underground. The junction will remain open for the whole period and access to properties will be maintained.

Upcoming overnight works

Monday 12 August – Green End Road closed for approximately 100m on the approach to King’s Hedges junction.

Tuesday 13 August – King’s Hedges Road closed for approximately 100m on the approach to King’s Hedges junction.

Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 August – Milton Road closed immediately north of the King’s Hedges junction to the Guided Busway. Lovell Road will be closed at the junction with Milton Road.

Friday 16 August – Milton Road closed between Kendal Way and south of the King’s Hedges junction. Kendal Way and Ramsden Square will be closed at the junction with Milton Road.

Monday 19 August – King’s Hedges junction closed, including approximately 50m before the junction on the south, east and western arms, and closed all the way to the Guided Busway on the northern arm. Lovell Road will be closed at the junction with Milton Road.

Tuesday 20 August – temporary four-way lights only. King’s Hedges junction will remain open.

Please be aware that some of the works can be affected by unforeseen circumstances and may overrun or be delayed. For example, asphalt and white lining cannot be completed in heavy rain. We have therefore allowed for our works to continue until Friday 23 August if required.

During this time, access will be maintained for all residents, although those who live in the main works area, or affected side roads without an alternative access, will need to be escorted.

Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles, while pedestrians and cyclists may be requested to stop and wait until it is safe to pass. There will be no bus services through the area once the overnight closures are in place.

The map shows three advisory diversion routes for the upcoming closures. These routes are designed to be suitable for use by both small and large vehicles. The routes show various diversion options which are advisable, depending on your destination.

Mitcham’s Corner completion

Cllr Rachel Wade, Cllr Gerri Bird and Cllr Elisa Meschini at our Mitcham’s Corner event.

Last week we marked the completion of all works at Mitcham’s Corner with local councillors showcasing the new facilities in the area, including new cycle parking, cycle lanes and footpaths, and the crossings.

These new additions mean that people have more options to choose how they travel to get to where they need to be.

These improvements also importantly ensure that the residents of Milton Road and surrounding neighbourhoods can enjoy safer and smoother journeys, with segregated cycle and pedestrian lanes. The scheme provides accessible crossings and direct paths from homes to shops, schools, businesses, and places of work for all members of the community.

King’s Hedges Cyclops junction

We are continuing to make good progress on the Cyclops junction at King’s Hedges.

The north-west quadrant is almost fully completed, and just a few final details remain to be finished in this section. We expect these works to be completed by early to mid August, and we’ll be looking to add wildflowers and verges in this area.

With just final surfacing of the road and lining to be completed, the new junction will be fully operational towards the end of the summer.

Copenhagen crossings

Hurst Park Avenue

We've made good progress at Hurst Park Avenue, with the crossing now complete.

While the crossing is completed, we will need to return to this area when we revisit the site to undertake road surfacing. We expect this to take place in September.

Fraser Road to the Milton Arms - east

We’ve recently been laying kerbing and creating tree pits. To find out more about this process, visit: Installing a SUDS Tree Pit - GreenBlue Urban.

To the south of Downham’s Lane, we’re currently carrying out drainage works, which means there is a daily lane closure from Downham’s Lane to the Milton Arms. These works will be completed in August and two-way traffic will resume.

Milton Arms to the south of Birch Close – west

We’ve recently laid asphalt in this section, which will connect the south of Birch Close up to the Milton Arms.

Once this section is finished, this side of the road can be opened, providing access from Arbury Road to the King’s Hedges junction.

Please note through access will not be possible as Woodhead Drive junction is our construction compound. To access the east, residents will need to use the dedicated facilities and cross north of Fraser Road.

Arbury Road area

This month, we’re very pleased to say that the three-way lights have been removed from the Union Lane/Arbury Road junction.

This means we’ve been able to reopen Union Lane, and both the northbound and southbound bus stops at Union Lane are open too.

The area in front of the shops is now largely finished. Just a few finishing touches are left to be carried out on the area.

This means the footway and cycle lane from Arbury Road to the southern section of the King’s Hedges junction is now largely completed, excluding Woodhead Drive where our construction compound is based. A total stretch of 1000 metres has been finished in this section.

Elizabeth Way / Highworth Avenue roundabout

This spring and summer the landscaping on the roundabout has gone through a beautiful range of colours as the planting continues to thrive.

We’ve produced the video below to showcase some the wide variety of plant and tree species that have been added.

Hurst Park Avenue to Ascham Road

Works are still ongoing in this section, and we’re making good progress.

All works in this area are now underway, as we have recently started works on the last untouched section between St Lawrence’s Church and Hurst Park Avenue.

The south side of Ascham Road is being prepared ready for asphalt surfacing, which we expect to start in early August.

Once this section is complete, we’ll be looking to switch our focus back to the east side of the road, where we will be completing the remaining unfinished works. We expect this will be towards the end of August.

Bus stop update

‘Bus stop suspended’ signage will always be displayed with a notice of the new temporary location. Information boards and service provider websites will also display information.
