Walkthrough 5

Our Milton Road project aims to improve public transport, cycling and walking infrastructure to make these sustainable travel options a more attractive alternative to the car.

We are pleased to confirm works to the north-east section of the King’s Hedges junction are now complete.

King Hedge's SE section

The team have now moved over to the south-east section and are making good progress. Pedestrians accessing the Co-Op or Green End Road will need to follow the pedestrian diversion shown below (green arrows) for the safety of all users of Milton Road.

The no right turn for traffic heading northbound on Milton Road and wishing to enter Green End Road remains in effect. Please follow the diversion via the A14 / Milton interchange.

Highworth Avenue / Elizabeth Way roundabout

The development of the south-west quadrant of the Highworth Avenue and Elizabeth Way roundabout is going well. Temporary surfacing is being carried out on the roundabout itself in the outbound direction. We will carry out this work overnight and under multiway traffic lights. Highworth Avenue remains closed to vehicles while works take place, with a diversion via Leys Road for motor vehicles. The estimated six-week closure of Highworth Avenue remains on track.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to access Highworth Avenue from the roundabout. As Highworth Avenue is reopened, we will proceed with the remaining works on the south-west quadrant.

Planting on the roundabout has started with a variety of different species of trees, shrubs and other flowering plants including acers, liquidambar styracifilua, betula albosinesis, cotoneaster, viburnum, sedum, hebe, allium, mint and thyme. These will be included in the maintenance package that has been planned for the new vegetation along Milton Road.

Footpath and cycleway update

At the southernmost part of the scheme (Mitcham’s Corner) on the west side, we have installed kerbs from Westbrook Drive to the dentist’s. Kerbs have also been put in place for the new bus stop, which will shortly be installed.

North of the Gilbert Road junction, we are making good progress on footway construction. We have installed drainage, kerbs and cycleway demarcation blocks.

South of the Elizabeth Way roundabout, excavation works are taking place to install the tree cells for the new trees.

As mentioned above, good progress is being made to the south-west quadrant of the Highworth Avenue / Elizabeth Way roundabout, and we are on schedule to allow two-way traffic in and out of Highworth Avenue. Remaining footway construction will continue in this area.

North and south of the King’s Hedges junction we are excavating the original footpath to start work on the new footpath and cycleway.
