Plans to make it easier to walk and cycle in Bottisham and the Swaffhams have been published as part of a four-week-long public engagement.

The proposals for the Bottisham and Swaffhams Greewnways aim to improve existing paths and streets for people walking, cycling and, where appropriate, horse-riding along the proposed routes.

The Bottisham Greenway will run from Midsummer Common in the city east through Fen Ditton, Stow-cum-Quy and on to Bottisham. The Swaffhams Greenway would split off from the Bottisham route at Stow-cum-Quy and pass through Lode and Swaffham Bulbeck to Swaffham Prior.

The Greater Cambridge Greenways is a new network of 12 walking, cycling and equestrian routes that link up towns and villages with Cambridge. They will follow off-road paths, run along quiet streets or provide facilities alongside busier roads.

Thomas Fitzpatrick, Transport Programme Manager at GCP, said:

“These two routes will be a vital part of our future Greenways network for walking and cycling, our team have done extensive design work and we want to hear from people on what they think before we look to finalise the designs and schedule in construction.

“Our aim with the Greenways, as with all GCP schemes, is to give people alternatives to driving in their car, whether it is getting to work, travelling to school or getting exercise with friends.

"We are incredibly lucky to live in an area which is ideal for walking and cycling so we want to provide the infrastructure people need. This is why we’re inviting anyone with an interest in the area to have their say on the proposals and feedback on what we are proposing.”

Starting in summer last year, the GCP has been running a rolling programme of public engagement on the updated designs for all the Greenways routes, following detailed engineering, landscaping and technical work.

An open, online public event will be held on 9 March with two more events on the 14 and 16 March in Stow-cum-Quy and Bottisham, respectively.

Branded maps and signposts will eventually line the route to help people find their way to their destination – with a ballot now open so people can decide what the signposts will look like and feel like.

The public are invited to choose between ‘Cambridge blue’ and ‘rural green.’ The poll is open until midday on 17 March and you can cast your vote on the ConsultCambs webpage.
