The look, feel and colour of the Greater Cambridge Greenways are being put in the hands of the public in a new poll.

The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) has opened a ballot where people can decide what maps and signposts will look like and vote for one of two colours.

The public are invited to choose between ‘Cambridge blue’ and ‘rural green.’ The blue reflects the city’s coat of arms, and the green reflects the natural environments many of the Greenways will travel through.

The poll will be open until midday on Friday 17 March. To cast your vote visit https://consultcambs.uk.engagementhq.com/gcp-greenway-wayfinding

The Greater Cambridge Greenways is a new network of 12 walking, cycling and equestrian routes that link up towns and villages with Cambridge. They will follow off-road paths, run along quiet streets or provide facilities alongside busier roads.

The maps and signs will help people to find their way on the 150 kilometres of routes currently under development by the GCP.

Thomas Fitzpatrick, Transport Programme Manager at the GCP, said:

“Once built, the Greater Cambridge Greenways will help to make walking and cycling easier and more accessible – the aim is to help us all travel more sustainably long into the future.

“The signs and maps will help people to find their way around the Greenways network, so they need to be distinctive, eye-catching and reflect the landscape and heritage of Greater Cambridge.

“This is why we want the people who will use the routes to have a say on how these signs and maps will look.”

Once voting is completed the results will be published and a recommendation made to the GCP Executive Board.

When completed, the Greenways will connect more than 50 communities and public transport hubs in the area.

The 12 Greenway routes include:

  • Barton Greenway: entering the city in Newnham with a second off-road route near Grantchester
  • Bottisham Greenway: entering the city via Stow-Cum-Quy and Fen Ditton and connecting to Midsummer Common and Jesus Green alongside the river
  • Comberton Greenway: which will pass Coton with a link to Hardwick and enter the city using a bridge over the M11 into the University West Campus
  • Fulbourn Greenway: from the east and finishing at Cambridge railway station
  • Haslingfield Greenway: passing Grantchester and Cambridge Rugby Club arriving on Barton Road
  • Horningsea Greenway: making improvements to the B1047 and entering Cambridge via Fen Ditton
  • Linton Greenway: now largely completed via the Babraham Road Park & Ride and into the Cambridge Biomedical Campus
  • Melbourn Greenway: making improvements along the A10 or routes through villages in parallel, linking up to existing routes north of the M11 into Trumpington and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The route will also improve links to Meldreth and Shepreth railway stations
  • Sawston Greenway: which would finish outside Long Road Sixth Form college having passed through Stapleford, Great Shelford and Cambridge Biomedical Campus
  • St Ives Greenway: using the existing active travel path alongside the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway with targeted improvements to paths and roads that join it, to help people reach the Greenway from nearby villages
  • Swaffhams Greenway: providing an improved route to join the Bottisham Greenway at Stow-cum-Quy
  • Waterbeach Greenway supporting active journeys to the north of the city to existing villages and the new town
