New, updated proposals to make it easier and safer for people to walk and cycle along Madingley Road have been revealed. The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) has launched a fresh community engagement exercise on the project which could deliver new footpaths and cycleways, improved crossings, junction upgrades and enhancements to landscaping to make journeys better. The GCP Executive Board agreed in 2020 to a plan that included a two-way cycle lane on the north side and a one-way cycle lane on the south side of Madingley Road but following discussions with residents and community groups regarding the potential loss of trees, the designs were revisited. The proposals – published today (Monday 2 September) – are now for one-way cycleways on both sides of the road which should not require any additional land. Project manager Anna Chylinska-Derkowska said: “We have considered people’s feedback from our previous consultation in developing these new proposals. Our aim is to balance the needs of residents and landowners to make sure we can deliver a scheme which helps people get to where they want to go. “The proposals will deliver significantly improved journeys along Madingley Road, providing enhanced links from the Park & Ride and Cambridge West site to the city to make it easier and safer for people to get to work, school or to meet their friends.” Other improvements could include Copenhagen-style crossings that give priority to pedestrians and cyclists, floating bus stops and additional pedestrian and cycle crossing points.
