Sidgwick Avenue

Pre-experimental traffic regulation order engagement - October 2026

Walkers on Sidgwick Avenue

Work to improve Sidgwick Avenue will begin on Monday 19 October 2026 and is expected to take around eight weeks.
The works are part of a 12–18-month trial to improve the route for people walking and wheeling. Improvements include widening the northern footway to two metres, removing on-street parking, installing drop-down bollards and repairing potholes.

During construction, the Queens Road/Silver Street junction will be temporarily closed during working hours, with a signed diversion via Newnham Road, Barton Road and Grange Road. Access to properties on Sidgwick Avenue will be maintained.
On-street parking will be removed from Sunday 18 October. Pedestrian and cycle access will remain available throughout the works.

Project background

Sidgwick Avenue forms part of the Comberton Greenway, before it ends in Silver Street.

Currently over 70% of people using Sidgwick Avenue walk or wheel but, on average each day, 250 pedestrians or wheelchair users are being forced off the path and out into the road. This is due to the hazardous state of the pavements which have been badly damaged by the growth of London Plane trees and have become almost impassable in some locations.

We are undertaking a trial on the street, to make it easier and safer to use, as part of an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order, which will see these changes implemented for a year and then evaluated.

You can see the detail of these changes in the Sidgwick Avenue ETRO Plan.
