GCP Project Manager Martin Meehan talks through the CSET phase 1 upgrades

Babraham Road Park & Ride has been expanded to help more people switch to public transport – the latest improvements being made to people’s journeys to the south-east of Cambridge.

The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) has added 152 additional parking spaces to the P&R and made space for the installation of solar panels to generate clean energy for the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

It is the latest in a long line of improvements that have been made by the GCP along the A1307 as part of phase one of the Cambridge South East Transport project to improve people’s journeys and make it easier and safer to walk, cycle and take a bus to work, education and to meet friends.

In the last 12 months, the GCP has also completed the following upgrades along this key corridor:

  • Hildersham signalised crossing: the GCP created a new junction, alongside a reduced 40mph speed limit, to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians crossing the A1307 in Hildersham and linking to the Linton Greenway.
  • Linton Greenway: improved junctions, signal controls and street lighting at Linton Village College and Linton Meadows. A new shared path has also been created from Hildersham west to Linton Road in Abington as part of the new active travel route.

The CSET1 project will now move on to create a new roundabout at Bartlow Road and enhancements to Deans Cross. Work to create improved active travel paths between Babraham Road P&R and Granham’s Road to formally complete section one of the Linton Greenway will also get underway this spring.

Cllr Elisa Meschini, Chair of the GCP’s Executive Board, said:

“It is great to see the significant improvements we are delivering to improve journeys for people travelling between Cambridge and communities to the southeast of the city.

"These upgrades will help people get to where they need to go - such as the Cambridge Biomedical Campus for work and appointments - more easily, safely and reliably now, ahead of the proposed busway which will transform public transport along this growing corridor.”

New sections of the Greenway – between Granham’s Road and Addenbrookes’ Hospital, and from the Babraham Road P&R to the Copley Hill Business Park – were completed in 2021.

An eastbound buslane between Dalehead Foods and Linton Village College to provide faster and more reliable bus journeys, as well as better junctions and signalling, was delivered during an earlier part of the CSET1 project, as well as a realigned junction at the A1307 with Granham’s Road.

A new busway and active travel route to provide significantly improved public transport journeys into the city and the Biomedical Campus from growing communities in the south-east – helping to cut congestion and improve air quality – would be delivered in phase two of the CSET project.
