Cambridge has been recognised as a great city for innovative travel, by winning the first ‘City or Town of the Year’ award at the third annual CiTTi awards.

The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) was among 100 organisations shortlisted for an award by City Transport and Traffic Innovation (CITTI) celebrating work and innovation in the transport sector.

The GCP was shortlisted for three CiTTi awards:

  • ‘Connected and Autonomous Vehicle’ for the development of a trial for automated buses as part of the public transport system.
  • ‘Active Travel’ for our work on greenways, Milton Road and Histon Road.
  • ‘City or Town of the Year’ for combining policy, technology and innovative practices that exemplify excellence in creating integrated, accessible, and sustainable transport networks

Cllr Elisa Meschini, chair of the Greater Cambridge Partnership, said: “Winning the City/Town of the Year award is a real accolade and is a reflection on the work we’ve put in to deliver innovative transport projects across our area. There’s so many great things going on across the county and I’m so pleased to see our achievements in improving transport in Cambridge and across the Greater Cambridge area recognised in this way.

“We’ve worked really hard over the last 10 years to bring a wide range of projects through the process from idea to construction to being open for our residents and visitors to use. Projects from Histon Road and the Chisholm Trail to innovative technology, greenways and the recently-completed Milton Road are all working together to give people more choice in how they move around our beautiful and thriving area. The work doesn’t stop there and we’ll continue to build new and improved infrastructure that helps people get to where they need to go.”

The judges said: “The trialling autonomous shuttles, increased use of zero emission buses and Dutch style cycling junctions have quickly improved the quality of infrastructure despite local opposition.”

Other areas shortlisted for the award were: Highland Council with HITRANS & Stagecoach North Scotland, Medway Council & Project Centre and London Borough of Camden.
