A planning application has been submitted to bring forward the delivery of the entire Comberton Greenway.
The application by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) marks a major step towards safer and more enjoyable travel for those looking to walk, cycle and ride around Cambridgeshire.
Jonathan Camp, GCP Project Manager, said:
“Reaching this milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the support of local landowners and farmers, and we’re grateful for their collaboration. The final design reflects what the community wanted. For example, the choice of surfacing materials was carefully selected to ensure areas retain their rural feel, and the design includes specific crossing points for tractors, as requested.“We’ve started early work on some parts of the Greenway already, including Adams Road – England’s first Cycle Street. Once the Greenway is complete, it will stretch from Comberton all the way into central Cambridge”.
Planning permission is required for certain sections of the greenway that aren’t on the road. But early works are already underway – or finished - on key stretches on-road, including:
- In Comberton, new and improved crossings and slower speed limits already mean that walking and cycling in the village is safer and easier.
- Work in Coton village is drawing to a close, with upgrades to street lighting, road resurfacing, redesigned junctions and traffic calming all in place.
- Construction is well underway on England’s first Cycle Street – Adams Road, which forms part of the Comberton Greenway. Under the new scheme, motorists will give way to cyclists while still having access to the road.
The Comberton Greenway starts in Comberton, heads north on Long Road and continues towards Coton. It then goes over the M11 bridge and carries on through the Cambridge University West Campus. The route continues along Adams Road, Grange Road, Sidgwick Avenue before reaching Silver Street.
