Construction set to begin on Barton Road (A603)

Published 04 August 2025

Works to widen and upgrade the walking and cycling path along Barton Road (A603) are set to start from Monday 11 August for approximately 21 weeks. The works will extend from the A603/M11 roundabout to approximately the Barton Road lay-by closest to the city centre.

This marks the latest development on the Barton Greenway, which will provide a safer, more accessible walking and cycling route between Barton and Cambridge.

The works will be carried out overnight between 8pm-6am to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. During this time, Barton Road will be closed to ensure the works are completed as soon as possible. A signed diversion is in place and is available on the GCP’s website. Each morning the road will be reinstated to two lanes. A temporary walking and cycling path are in place to divert users whilst the main path is closed.

While the works are underway, one lane on the A603/M11 roundabout will be closed. This is to ensure the traffic speeds are in line with the temporary 30mph limit on Barton Road.

Thomas Fitzpatrick, Head of GCP programme, said:

“Our greenways are designed to make active travel safer and more attractive for everyone – the simple aim is to give people choice in how they move, whether they are traveling to Cambridge or visiting a nearby village. The works to widen the current walking and cycle path along Barton Road will enable us to deliver on this goal of making it easier for those wishing to go to and from the city on foot or by bike. To do this unfortunately requires us to make an overnight road closure and introduce a diversion route so we would like to thank everyone from the local community, businesses and parish councils for their patience as work on the Barton Greenway continues.”

Once completed, the Barton Greenway will boast a wider shared-use path with better drainage to ensure the route can be used in all weather, year-round. Improved safety for users will be achieved through better separation between the path and road, alongside a new, slower speed limit for all vehicles.

The Greater Cambridge Partnership’s (GCP) Greenways will make it easier and safer to walk and cycle between approximately fifty surrounding villages and the city, through the creation of new and improved paths, better crossings and safer streets.
