Construction set to begin on Milton Road transport project

Construction to transform walking, cycling and bus journeys along Milton Road is set to begin in the spring.

Work on new bus lanes and active travel links to create more reliable public transport trips and safer walking and cycling journeys along this key Cambridge route will begin shortly.

Improvements to Milton Road to encourage more people to travel sustainably will see the installation of the second state-of-the-art CYCLOPS junction in Cambridge at the junction of Milton Road with Elizabeth Way and Highworth Avenue.

This will improve safety through the construction of an orbital cycling and walking route at the junction.

These upgrades will help to cut congestion and improve air quality along a key route between Cambridge, the A10 and A14, villages to the north and growing employment sites.

Papers published today for the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s Joint Assembly meeting on 17 February outline the proposed construction and traffic management plans. Subject to approval of the plans by the GCP’s Executive Board in March, construction will get underway in the spring.

While the recent upgrade to Histon Road required one-way road closures throughout construction, two-way traffic will be maintained along Milton Road for the majority of the construction works, with the bus lanes closed to make space for the work to be carried out safely.

The GCP consulted on the project in 2018 and has made several modifications to the designs, such as the location of bus stops, following feedback from the public and ongoing engagement with the Milton Road Local Liaison Forum (LLF), which was presented the construction and traffic plans last week.

The scheme has been widely supported by the community, with the LLF putting forward a resolution in March 2021 ‘to ensure the project advances to construction no later than the beginning of 2022 to bring about the much-needed improvements set out in the plans’.

Construction on the Milton Road project – which follows on from the successful opening of the GCP’s Histon Road scheme in autumn 2021 – is estimated to complete in late summer 2024.
