The proposed hub – part of the wider Cambridge Eastern Access programme – would replace the existing Newmarket Road Park & Ride site, which sits on land earmarked for future development. Located near the Newmarket Road and Airport Way junction, the new facility would offer double the current car parking capacity (around 1,800 spaces), new cycle parking and storage, dedicated passenger waiting areas, and electric vehicle charging facilities.
The consultation will run from Monday 8 September to Monday 3 November 2025. Residents, commuters, and stakeholders are invited to share their views on the proposed design, facilities, and features to ensure the new Travel Hub meets community needs before a planning application is submitted.
Jo Baker, Project Manager, said: “This new travel hub is a vital step towards delivering a more sustainable and connected Cambridge. The existing site on Newmarket Road no longer meets the demand for people wanted to come into Cambridge from the east so we want to make sure people get to express their views on our new hub. We want to hear from everyone who travels in and around the city so we can ensure the final design works for our communities and gives people greater choice in how they travel.”
Designed with future growth in mind, the hub would provide:
- A bus turning area and multiple bus stops to accommodate future demand
- Improved walking and cycling connections, including links to the Chisholm Trail and local GCP greenways
- Potential for new bus routes to key destinations such as the Biomedical Campus, city centre, and railway stations.
An Environmental Impact Assessment is being carried out alongside the design process to ensure environmental considerations are built in from the outset.
Two public events will be held during the consultation:
- Online Teams meeting: Thursday 9 October, 5:30pm – 7:30pm
- In-person drop-in session: Tuesday 14 October, 3pm – 8pm at Newmarket Road Park & Ride, CB5 8AA
Feedback can be submitted via the online questionnaire at www.greatercambridge.org.uk/cea-travelhub, by email to hello@greatercambridge.org.uk, or by requesting a paper questionnaire.
Following the consultation, designs will be refined, and a planning application is expected to be submitted in 2026. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in 2027, subject to approvals.
