Delivery of a new railway station for Waterbeach advances

Published 08 August 2025

The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) has announced that Spencer Group has won the tender to construct the new railway station for Waterbeach.

The new station is fundamental to the successful development of the growing community in Waterbeach, where the delivery of 11,000 new homes is already underway. The station will have wider platforms, an accessible footbridge, and will be integrated into a wider network of walking, cycling and bus facilities.

Cllr Brian Milnes, chair of the GCP executive board said: “The new railway station was a core requirement of the Waterbeach development's planning permission and our objective is to ensure rail travel is a preferred choice for residents. The project's progress is excellent news and the new station will offer quick, convenient access to the city and reduce the reliance on private cars.”

In July, the GCP’s executive board, its decision-making body, agreed the full business case for the new station and the process which will propose to close the existing station once it’s been replaced.

The GCP and Spencer Group are now working on finalising elements of the contract. A consultation on the closure of the existing station, run by the Department for Transport, is expected towards the end of the year.
