Great response to plans for Newmarket Road travel hub

Published 07 November 2025

Over 500 people have responded to the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s (GCP) consultation on designs for the new Newmarket Road travel hub.

The new hub will replace the existing Newmarket Road Park & Ride, which is leased and sits on land earmarked for future development. The new site is near the Newmarket Road and Airport Way junction, with easier access from the A14.

The designs for the travel hub include:

  • double the current car parking spaces
  • 200 new cycle parking spaces and storage
  • electric vehicle charging facilities
  • signal-controlled access junctions on Newmarket Road and Airport Way
  • extension of the Teversham shared-use path into the site

Jo Baker, senior project manager at the Greater Cambridge Partnership, said: “Thanks to everybody who has given us their insight into what the community needs. We’ve had a great response and the feedback will help us to create a travel hub that supports sustainable travel, eases congestion and improves connections into Cambridge”.

Now the consultation has closed, the Greater Cambridge Partnership will review all submissions and make sure that feedback informs the design process. The next step will be submitting a formal planning application in 2026. Subject to the approval of planning, the GCP will complete detailed designs and appoint a contractor to build the hub. Construction is due to start in 2027, subject to approvals.
