Greenway works to begin near Cambridge and Little Abington business parks

Published 11 July 2024

Work to upgrade the roads near the St John’s Innovation Park in Cambridge and Granta Park in Little Abington as part of a flagship walking and cycling project will get underway this month.

These improvements are part of the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s Greenways – a network of 12 new walking and cycling routes to better connect surrounding villages to Cambridge.

This week, the GCP will begin work in Cowley Road to include a wider cycle path and separate footpath as part of the Waterbeach Greenway.

From 15 July, a new path will also be installed alongside the old Newmarket Road between Granta Park and Fourwentways as part of the Linton Greenway.

Cllr Elisa Meschini, Chair of the GCP Executive Board said:

“Wherever we live, we all want streets, roads and paths that are safe and easy to use and help us to get where we need to go - the Greenways are here to do that.

"The works underway will make it that bit easier to get around – while feeling much safer particularly on these busy routes into our business and science parks.”

Major upgrades to Cowley Road

Cowley Road works started on Sunday 7 July and run into November 2024.

A wider cycling path and separate footpath will replace the current pavement running between the A14 footbridge and main junction with Milton Road. Junction safety improvements and renewed lighting will also be installed.

The scheme is part of the Waterbeach Greenway, which would run from Cambridge North Station to Waterbeach New Town. Proposals for the rest of the Waterbeach Greenway are expected to be discussed later this year by the GCP’s Executive Board.

Improving old Newmarket Road in Little Abington

Works on a section of the Linton Greenway will start on Monday 15 July, taking up to 12 weeks to complete.

The new path alongside the old Newmarket Road will connect Granta Park to the footbridge over the A11. Plans to link Granta Park to Hildersham along the Pampisford road are also being considered.

Safer 20mph streets in Comberton

Making school runs safer and easier, the GCP has completed work to install two new zebra crossings in Comberton - one outside Comberton Village College and one close to Meridian Primary School.

Throughout the village, eight junctions have been updated with safer crossings, including raised crossings at side-roads alongside ‘tactile paving’ to help blind and partially sighted people feel where they are crossing a road.
