Greenways update: November 2025
Published 01 December 2025Welcome to our November 2025 newsletter
We're bringing you the latest updates from across the greenways so you can learn about the improvements happening near you and when works might take place.
In this month’s issue you can find out more about:
Barton Greenway

Barton village
Works to introduce safer crossings and traffic calming in Barton village are almost complete. Our contractors left the village at the end of November and will return for a short period in January to complete resurfacing works. Once complete, our works in Barton village will:
- Make walking and cycling safer for everyone, including children, families and older residents.
- Improve safety and visibility with better lighting, smoother pavements and crossings.
- Reduce speeds by introducing a 20mph speed limit.

Barton Raod
On Barton Road, construction is progressing well, and works are planned for completion slightly ahead of programme.
The newly constructed three-metre-wide path is anticipated to be finished by the end of the year. The site will be cleared by the end of the year, returning the layby to its original state.
Currently the pathway is undergoing surfacing. Once this is completed, the final stage of works will start around the city boundary/opposite the layby area. To enable this, the temporary push button crossing points will be moved to this area.
Once completed, Barton Road will provide a wider walking and cycling path with improved drainage ensuring the route can be safely used whatever the weather. Our aim is to improve safety for people walking, cycling and driving through better separation between the path and road, alongside a new, slower speed limit for all vehicles.
Comberton Greenway

Adams Road
The Adams Road section of the Comberton Greenway runs from Grange Road to Wilberforce Road junction. Already used by up to 3,000 cyclists daily, Adams Road will become England’s first Cycle Street.
Works are underway on the northern side of Adams Road between Wilberforce and Sylvester Road where the existing footways have been excavated as part of the site clearance and for new kerb lines.
Some additional works have been required to reconstruct the existing footways and driveway areas where the original construction was not up to standard. New edgings at the back of the footway, in front of hedge lines and across driveways have been added to our package of works.
Over the next few weeks, the widened footway and new rain gardens will be completed on the northern side of Adams Road between Wilberforce and Sylvester Road. Once this has been finished, works will commence on the southern side of Adams Road in the new year.
We would like to thank the residents of Adams Road for their patience.

Coton village
In Coton construction is progressing well. At the Cambridge Road junction drainage works and the installation of kerbing is underway. After this has been completed, the path will be resurfaced. Three-way temporary traffic lights are in operation.
At the High Street junction, excavation is ongoing ahead of the introduction of a new formalised give way junction.
Works have concluded on The Footpath and Whitwell Way, which has been resurfaced with new kerbs installed.
Signage has been placed at the village entrance to show that businesses remain open as usual whilst works are ongoing. Currently, the project is expected to finish in early 2026. We will return to complete the programme in the new year. This will involve implementing a speed limit of 20mph throughout the village and improvements to streetlighting.
Waterbeach Greenway
Cowley Road
The segregated cycle track and separate footway along Cowley Road has been in use for over six months. The path gives priority to people walking, wheeling and cycling along the route at side roads and creates new, safer crossings to the business and science parks for employees and visitors. We spoke to residents, local councillors and those who work nearby to discuss how our changes have made a difference to those walking and cycling in the north of Cambridge. Find out more here: Cowley Road improvements.
Swaffham Greenway
At the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s Executive Board, which took place on Thursday 6 November , the route alignment was revised for the Swaffham Greenway. The route will now start at Swaffham Bulbeck and continue past Anglesey Abbey, through Lode and to Stow-cum-Quy where it joins the Bottisham Greenway for journeys onto Newmarket Road Park and Ride, Fen Ditton village and school, as well as the riverside greenspaces and the city centre.
Melbourn Greenway
Shepreth
Construction on the Shepreth spur section of the Melbourn Greenway is planned to commence next year. We will be working with the Parish Council to discuss timescales for construction work and phasing. Further information relating to works will be provided as our plans progress.
