Barton village

In Barton, improvements to the path and carriageway located on the junction between Kings Grove/New Road, High Street/School Lane/New Road and Comberton Road are progressing well.

Over the next few weeks, the team will be completing planned works on the Kings Grove/New Road works. This will involve:

  • Installing new streetlight columns on New Road
  • Adding improved drainage
  • Completing the road’s kerb line
  • Constructing raised tables and adding the surface layer of tarmac to the footway at New Road and Kings Grove.

These works will be completed utilising both traffic lights during the day and via road closures at night.

Access will be maintained for residents throughout these works but they may be required to use the diversion. There will be no through route for other residents of Barton village. Those allowed through the closure will be Kings Grove residents or those requiring access to Burwash Manor at night. We will be in touch with residents directly impacted by any road closures prior to works taking place to explain how access will be managed.

The following works will be completed on Comberton Road and the junction of High Street/School Lane/New Road:

  • Completion of the drainage improvements on Comberton Road
  • Completion of the landscaping works located between School Lane and High Street
  • Improved streetlighting on New Road between Kings Grove junction and Comberton Road.

These works will use multiway lights during the daytime to ensure the safety of the workforce and anyone travelling along the route.

We would like to thank everyone from the local community for their patience as work on the Barton Greenway continues.

Barton road works September

Barton Road

Construction works on Barton Road started in August. The site has been set up with a temporary path in place on the southern side of Barton Road with traffic light-controlled crossing points to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

The works have progressed well with the removal of the existing tarmac path and road kerb line between the Haggis Farm interchange and Laundry Farm. New drainage works have also started ready for the new road kerb line, while fibre network ducting has been added as part of the county wide initiative Connecting Cambridgeshire for future proofing. The installation of the ducting will reduce the need for future works requiring excavation of the road, making fibre network connections quicker and easier.

The project involves improvements to the existing walking and cycling path on the A603 Barton Road, from the Haggis interchange to the city boundary. Once completed, Barton Road will provide a wider walking and cycling path with improved drainage ensuring the route can be safely used whatever the weather. Our aim is to improve safety for people walking, cycling and driving through better separation between the path and road, alongside a new, slower speed limit for all vehicles.

Comberton Greenway

Comberton Greenway – Adams Road

The Adams Road section of the Comberton Greenway runs from Grange Road to Wilberforce Road junction. Already used by up to 3,000 cyclists daily, Adams Road will become England’s first Cycle Street.

Works on Adams Road will be starting on Monday 13 October.

Before works start, a compound will be set up in the green area of the Wilberforce/Adams Road junction.

Once construction is underway, daytime road closures will be in place with access being maintained for residents only between Wilberforce Road, Stacey Lane and Sylvester Road. Double yellow lines will be added with no parking being enforced along Adams Road.

Once works are complete, limited parking bays will be constructed and all other on street parking removed. This will improve safety by creating more space along the footways whilst providing additional planting.

The works on Adams Road will involve altering the existing road layout by widening both sides of the footways to ensure there is appropriate room for pedestrians. As part of the new layout cyclists will have priority over motor vehicles. All footways and the entire road will be resurfaced with planting areas along the road’s edge and drainage added.

The improvement of the existing signalised junction of Grange Road, a new raised table junction at Adams Road/Slyvester Road and new uncontrolled crossings on Adams Road are included in the project.

During works there will be closure points at each end of Adams Road, access for residents will remain, however residents may be expected to come through a particular end depending on the stage of works. Signage will be in place if this is the case.

We would like to thank the residents of Adams Road for their patience.

Coton village

Preparation for works started last week (week of 22nd September) with a compound set up on Coton recreational field.

Construction began on Monday 29 September with works including street lighting upgrades, carriageway resurfacing, redesigned junctions, footway improvement works and raised traffic-calming features to improve safety and visibility. Additional drainage and landscaping are also planned to accommodate the main works.

Two raised tables, similar to those being installed in Barton village, will be introduced at the junction in the centre of the village (High Street/Cambridge Road) and outside Coton primary school as traffic calming measures to slow vehicle speeds. This will ensure parents and children will be able to cross safely at school drop-off and pickups while pedestrians and cyclists can cross the junctions at other times. Works outside The Plough Public house will consist of an introduction of a new formalised give way junction and new landscaping.

Most activity will take place during the day under temporary traffic management with access maintained as required, with some night-time closures for surfacing and road marking to minimise the impact to residents.

Haslingfield Greenway

Progress on the Haslingfield Greenway is continuing with design work ongoing. We hope to be able to submit a planning application towards the end of this year following discussions with landowners.

St Ives Greenway – Oakington to Cottenham

We are in the process of refining the detailed designs for the greenway which are supported by ecological surveys and environmental assessments. We are continuing to have discussions with landowners along the route to secure the relevant permissions.
