Histon Road to fully reopen after significant upgrades

Histon Road will be reopened to all traffic later this week following significant upgrades to make walking, cycling and public transport journeys safer, faster and more reliable.

The Greater Cambridge Partnership has created a dedicated bus lane, floating bus stops, additional and wider cycle lanes along with a raft of safety improvements to encourage more people to walk, cycle or take the bus along Histon Road.

All users will be able to use the enhanced Histon Road when it is fully reopened in both directions from 6pm on 30 September. Stagecoach will notify customers about its plans to reintroduce bus services along the length of Histon Road in due course.

The scheme forms part of the GCP’s plans to create an integrated transport network that cuts congestion and improves journey times and air quality.

“I am delighted that we can reopen the whole of Histon Road to two-way traffic and everyone can benefit from better, safer and more reliable journeys along this key route between the A14, villages to the north and the city.

“We would like to thank you all for your patience while we have carried out this vital work to improve Histon Road. We believe this project will help to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and switch to more sustainable modes of transport.

“The remaining work to finish the project can be managed safely by the combination of temporary traffic lights and a final set of planned overnight closures.”

Overnight closures between 8pm and 6am on the section between the Gilbert Road junction and the Kings Hedges Road junction will continue until 8 October. Some temporary local traffic light will also be needed to finish the scheme.

A diversion route via the A14, Milton Road and Victoria Road will be in place for the final overnight closures.
