A new all-weather accessible path planned alongside the historic ‘Baulk Path’ could be used by over 250 cyclists and almost 50 pedestrians per day, according to papers published by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP).
Currently the route is used by around 20 people per day, however new forecasts suggest use of the scenic off-road bridleway could increase substantially once the new path is in place, with people able to better use it for walking, riding, and wheeling all year round.
As part of the Barton Greenway, the GCP are proposing to install the sealed 3-metre-wide path alongside the ‘Baulk Path’ which runs for 2.2 kilometres between Grantchester and Cambridge. The current unsurfaced bridleway is uneven and muddy and is unusable for most people who cycle or use a wheelchair. The plans, being discussed by the GCP’s joint assembly, would also see the route become a legal right of way with year-round access.
Thomas Fitzpatrick, Head of GCP Programme, said: “The Baulk Path is an important historic route, but particularly at this time of the year, it’s muddy and difficult to pass especially if you are on a bike. Our new sealed weather-proof surface, to run alongside the Path, will help more people use and enjoy the route - especially new or less confident bike riders as it’s completely off-road.
“By widening the green corridor alongside the existing path, these plans would not only preserve but enhance the ecology of the area, creating new space for grassland and tree planting, and protecting the streamway from surface water run-off before it enters the River Cam.
“Also the route is currently a permissive bridleway, which means it can be closed to the public at any time. By making it part of the Barton Greenway, it will become a right of way, forever.”
