The Milton Road project aims to improve public transport, cycling and walking infrastructure to make these sustainable travel options a more attractive alternative to the car.

We’ve been making lots of progress as we move towards the final stages of the project with many sections now complete and available for use.

The Elizabeth Way / Highworth Avenue roundabout is now in use

King’s Hedges Cyclops junction

King’s Hedges junction under construction

We are making excellent progress on the Cyclops junction at King’s Hedges, with the north-west quadrant mainly complete, bar a few final details.

Final surfacing of the road and lining still need to be completed, after which the new junction will be fully operational towards the end of the summer. As soon as work has been completed on the last quadrant, all four crossing locations will be open for use.

Overnight works

Arbury Road junction while overnight works were taking place

Thank you for your patience and understanding during our overnight resurfacing works.

We’re now looking to undertake overnight works in the following areas:

George Street

To construct one of our final Copenhagen crossings, we are currently working overnight at the junction of George Street and Milton Road. George Street is therefore closed overnight for approximately six weeks from w/c 1 July. Works are in operation between the hours of 8pm to 6am, due to the limited working space available.

The road is reopened every morning, so should residents need to go out between 6am and 8pm, they are able to exit as normal.

While the road is closed, you will not be able to exit via the junction with Milton Road.

Finishing touches near the roundabout/Arbury Rd shops

We will be carrying out overnight works to finalise some areas on the east, between the Elizabeth Way roundabout and the newly installed bus stop opposite the Arbury Road shops. Works include, but are not limited to, tarmacking the footway, adjusting kerbing and finalising driveways.

We will be starting these works w/c 8 July for approximately ten nights. The works will take place between the hours of 8pm – 6am, with some temporary traffic management in place.

During this time, Milton Road will remain open while we carry out these works and access will be maintained.

North of King’s Hedges

Footway and cycle lane between Fraser Road and King’s Hedges

Works on the east and west side are progressing well.

On the east side, final surfacing has now been laid. This means that the east side of Milton Road is now complete from Fraser Road to the end of the project.

On the west side, the Lovell Road Copenhagen crossing is now complete, and works up from the King’s Hedges junction are proceeding well.

For final utility diversion works to be completed on the Copenhagen crossing, Lovell Road will be closed from Monday 8 July for approximately three days.

Access to Lovell Road for vehicles will be via the King’s Hedges Road access point. A walkway onto Milton Road from Lovell Road will be maintained for cyclists and pedestrians.

Completed Copenhagen crossings

Collage of Copenhagen crossings on Milton Road

We are pleased that the majority of our Copenhagen crossings have been completed, with the total now coming to 11.

The installation of these crossings mean quicker and safer journeys across these junctions for pedestrians and cyclists on Milton Road.

Copenhagen crossings to be completed

Only three Copenhagen crossings are left to be completed: George Street (as detailed above), Woodhead Drive, and Hurst Park Avenue.

Woodhead Drive

Woodhead Drive junction

We have been reorganising the compound at Woodhead Drive to make space for works at the junction. We will be working on the north side of the footway to construct a new pit for trees and complete the footpath construction.  We will then switch to the south side of Woodhead Drive to complete the same and we will then start works to construct the Copenhagen crossing.

Hurst Park Avenue

Hurst Park Avenue

We are making good progress at Hurst Park Avenue and expect the crossing to be complete by mid to late July.

Arbury Road area

The area in front of the shops is now largely finished.

The final installation of some cycle stands, a small amount of surfacing and a few finishing touches are still to be carried out.

Elizabeth Way / Highworth Avenue roundabout

Elizabeth Way roundabout MR June 24

As above, final works to complete the roundabout have now taken place.

The last step will be to turn the traffic lights on once we have removed the temporary lights at Hurst Park Avenue. Once operational, the new signals will provide dedicated crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, creating a safer environment for all users.

Mitchams Corner area

Newly installed crossing at the Westbrook Centre

The crossing at Westbrook is now in use.

There are just a few finishing touches to add before this area is complete.

Bus stop update

The new northbound and southbound bus stops at Kendal Way are now in place and can be used.

‘Bus stop suspended’ signage will always be displayed with a notice of the new temporary location. Information boards and service provider websites will also display information.

Drop-in session

The last monthly drop-in session was held on Monday 1 July. This was advertised in last month’s update to ensure sufficient notice was given due to this update coming out a little later than usual.

Our next monthly drop-in session, with staff from Milestone, will be 11am – 12pm on Monday 5 August at Milton Road Library. Please do note that this is a drop-in session, and visitors are encouraged to free up space for those coming in.
