Overnight road closures in Barton village

Published 09 January 2026

Road closures in Barton village will take place overnight between Monday 12 January and Monday 19 January to complete road and footpath surfacing in the village, as one of the final steps in delivering this part of the Barton Greenway.

Roads will be fully open to all users during daytime hours (6am – 8pm), but a diversion route will be in place overnight for vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the footways throughout the works.

During the roadworks, sections of road closed overnight will vary as work progresses:

  • On Monday 12 January, a section of New Road will be closed, with the diversion route via High Street and Cambridge Road.
  • Between Tuesday 13 January and Thursday 15 January, sections of New Road, Comberton Road and High Street (at the intersection of these roads) will be closed overnight. The diversion route will be via Cambridge Road - Wimpole Road - Comberton Road - Royston Lane - South Street - Barton Road.
  • On Friday 16 January, a section of New Road will be closed. The diversion route will be via High Street and Cambridge Road.
  • For Monday 19 January, the entire length of New Road, and sections of Comberton Road and High Street (at the intersection of these roads) will be closed overnight. The diversion route will be via Cambridge Road - Wimpole Road - Comberton Road - Royston Lane - South Street - Barton Road.

These works are weather dependent, and it is possible that poor conditions may lead to delays or schedule changes.

The Barton Greenway will connect Barton, Grantchester and Cambridge via a walking and cycling route, giving people more ways to get around. Works have included improved drainage and lighting, new surfaces on roads and paths, safer crossings, speed calming measures, and a new 20mph speed limit throughout the village.

Barton Greenway is part of the Greater Cambridge Greenways, a 150-km network of walking, wheeling and cycling routes connecting Cambridge with its surrounding villages.
