Safer journeys to school in Barton, just in time for the new term

Published 30 December 2025

The bulk of works along Barton Road and in Barton village are now complete.

In Barton village, improved drainage and lighting, new surfaces on roads and paths, safer crossings, speed calming measures, and a new 20mph speed limit throughout the village, are all now in place.

On Barton Road, a new three-metre-wide path for pedestrians and cyclists has been installed which, alongside improved drainage and a reduced speed limit, will make journeys between Cambridge, Barton village and beyond safer for all.

The works have taken place as part of the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s project to deliver the Barton Greenway, a continuous walking and cycling route from Barton village to Cambridge.

Jonathan Camp, Senior Project Manager at GCP said: “Thanks so much to everyone for their patience during these works to make walking, wheeling and cycling around the village easier. We are already seeing the benefits; children and families will start the new term with safer journeys to Barton C of E Primary School.

“We’re delivering the Barton Greenway which, when completed, will connect Barton, Grantchester and Cambridge via a walking and cycling route, giving people more ways to get around.”

Works began in August 2025 and are largely complete, with some surfacing to take place in January 2026.

Barton Greenway is part of the Greater Cambridge Greenways, a 150-km network of walking, wheeling and cycling routes connecting Cambridge with its surrounding villages. The Barton Greenway will eventually join up with the Comberton Greenway on its route between Comberton and West Cambridge.
