We’re building the new railway station for Waterbeach, which will be modern, accessible, fit-for-purpose and future-proofed. Building the station unlocks planning permission for 4,500 new homes and will support the growth of the community.
The Department for Transport will lead the consultation process on the future of the existing station. The Greater Cambridge Partnership has no powers to be able to close a station: the authority and statutory duty lies with the Department for Transport.
As work gets underway on the new railway station for Waterbeach, we wanted to provide an update on activity taking place over the coming weeks.
This week enabling works are underway to the east of Bannold Drove as we prepare the site for the next stages of construction.
From Monday 12 October, this activity will continue and will also include the movement of excavated material from the area west of Bannold Drove as part of the ongoing site preparation works.
A temporary welfare area has been established at the end of the haul road while our permanent site facilities and construction compound are prepared adjacent to the new car park area.
We recognise the importance of managing construction traffic carefully. All Spencer Rail Engineering operatives and delivery drivers have been instructed to access the site using the dedicated haul road from the A10 only.

In partnership with Spencer Rail Engineering, on Tuesday 22 September, we held an open day at Waterbeach Barracks.
We talked through the designs and answered residents’ questions – with over 150 attendees, it was great to see so much interest and support for the project – thank you to everyone who came along.
The temporary haul road to take construction traffic direct to the site from the A10 is now complete. Built by Winvic Construction and funded by Homes England, it will help reduce disruption to residents in Waterbeach village.
Construction is set to start in autumn 2026 and the station planned to be open by summer 2028. The process to close the existing station is being led by the Department for Transport. Any closure would not take place until the new station is operational.
Spencer Rail Engineering was behind the recent £35 million upgrade of sidings at Cambridge railway station. As part of the Waterbeach project, they have committed to an £11m social value action plan, including local school visits and using local suppliers.
