Addenbrooke’s roundabout

Work on the Addenbrooke’s roundabout safety improvements started on Monday 12 May 2025.

The works aim to improve safety for people walking and cycling and provide a much easier to navigate roundabout with less risk to all users.

The central island of the roundabout will be reduced to allow for the carriageway to be widened, which in turn will allow for paths and crossings to be widened for people walking and cycling.

The work will begin with overnight single-lane closures to allow traffic to continue to flow whilst works are completed. The roundabout will remain accessible from all directions during the works, and emergency services will not be affected.

Update: w/c 22 September

With just over a month of construction to go, improvements continue at Addenbrooke’s roundabout.

Works to install ducting for fibre network cables are progressing smoothly. This ducting will have to go through the bus station entrance and works here will be carried out after the final bus service each night to minimise disruption, in agreement with Cambridgeshire County Council.

Carriageway preparation is on schedule, with surfacing due to begin once the required Temporary Traffic Regulation Order takes effect on 13 October. Fendon Road will be closed overnight (8pm–6am) for the week while the roundabout is fully resurfaced and re-lined. Emergency services access will be maintained throughout, and the road will reopen each morning. Daytime access will not be affected.

The October programme of works includes planing, asphalt surfacing, coloured cycle box re-surfacing and final lining. The scope has been extended to resurface the entire roundabout, reducing the risk of potholes and future maintenance needs.

Permanent traffic signals will be installed following the resurfacing.

Designs

The designs reduce the size of the central island to accommodate the upgraded walking and cycling links, while retaining the width of the lanes in the road for motorised vehicles, with the roundabout being used at all times by emergency services.

The design reflects consultation feedback, with the reintroduction of the informal crossing point on the Fendon Road arm and an enhanced two stage crossing of the southern arm of the roundabout.

It's intended that the scheme will be implemented by the end of 2025, and on this basis it’s secured additional funding from our partners at the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority.
