Families, schoolchildren and residents from Meldreth and Melbourn joined the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) and local councillors yesterday (Wednesday 16 July) to celebrate the completion of improvements to the Meldreth Station Link. The well-loved local route now offers a safer, spacious and more welcoming experience for anyone travelling on foot, by bike or wheels.
Community come together to celebrate the delivery of the upgraded Meldreth Station Link

To mark the occasion, Junior Travel Ambassadors from Meldreth Primary School joined students from Melbourn Village College and Melbourn Primary in a scavenger hunt along the path, spotting new features of the route which include a much wider walking and cycling route, lighting, new cycle parking and new surfacing.
The Meldreth Station Link connects residents to Meldreth Station and forms part of the wider Melbourn Greenway – a GCP project designed to enable safer and more sustainable travel between South Cambridgeshire and Cambridge city centre. The GCP worked closely with local councillors, landowners, residents and community groups to deliver the improvements and restore this vital route to full use.

Cllr Brian Milnes, Chair of the Greater Cambridge Partnership, said:
“This path is a fantastic example of what happens when we invest in active travel at a local level. Whether it’s walking to school, cycling to the station or enjoying a weekend stroll, the improvements we’ve made make a real difference to everyday journeys. It’s safer, more accessible, and much more enjoyable and it’s great to see children from local schools flying the flag for more sustainable travel. This is what the greenways are about – safely connecting people with the places they want to go while providing more sustainable ways to travel.”
Cllr Susan van de Ven, South Cambridgeshire District Councillor for Bassingbourn and Litlington and former County Councillor for Melbourn & Bassingbourn said:
“Yesterday's event was a wonderful way to showcase better ways of travelling between our local villages. Alongside the resurfacing of the path and repainting of the underpass, the upgraded Meldreth Link has already encouraged more residents to walk and cycle through the area and it has been great to see so many use it for commuting to school and work. It was particularly lovely to see children, parents and friends getting involved in the afternoon’s activities along the path and connecting with their neighbours.”
