Executive board approval for Barton Greenway’s full business case

Published 11 July 2025

The Greater Cambridge Partnership’s (GCP) Barton Greenway project has reached a major milestone, with the executive board officially approving the full business case for the 8km walking and cycling route linking Barton to Cambridge.

The scheme – currently progressing through the planning process with Cambridgeshire County Council – is expected to be used by thousands of people each week, providing a safer, more accessible route for those travelling by foot, bike or other forms of active travel.

During the meeting, members asked officers to carry out a review of the Baulk Path section of the greenway which will then be brought back for consideration, but the rest of the route is to be progressed as soon as possible.

Cllr Brian Milnes, chair of the GCP executive board said: “Reaching full business case approval is a major step towards improving everyday life for people in and around Barton. This route will give families, commuters, and schoolchildren a safer, more reliable way to get into Cambridge and the surrounding area without needing to rely on a car. It’s about creating a greener, healthier, and more connected future – where people can travel in ways that work for them, and where local communities feel better linked.”

Early works have been underway in Barton since spring, with key sections of the route already seeing improvements. Head of programme at the GCP, Thomas Fitzpatrick, added:

“We really appreciate the continued patience and support of the local community, businesses and the parish council as work on the Barton Greenway progresses. We understand that roadworks can be disruptive, and we're grateful for the understanding shown so far.”

Works are currently underway on the Kings Grove junction and the New Road/High Street/School Lane area following improvements to widen the path along New Road.

Further construction along the greenway is also planned for this year on the A603 (Barton Road) to widen and improve the existing walking and cycling path heading into Cambridge.
