Greenways update: June 2025
Published 07 July 2025Welcome to our June 2025 update on the Greater Cambridge greenways which provides the latest news across the 12 walking, wheeling, cycling routes, so you can see what improvements are happening near you when works are taking place.
This month there are important updates on the following greenways:
- Barton
- Comberton
- Horningsea
- Haslingfield
Barton Greenway

Barton village
Work is progressing well on the New Road footway between Kings Grove and Cambridge Road (A603), with the team working on: widening the path, installing new signage, and preparing for future streetlighting.
Construction has also begun at the Kings Grove / New Road and High Street / Comberton Road junctions to install raised table crossings to make it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross the road.
Once these are complete, on the team will move to School Lane, Comberton Road, and additional sections of New Road. These later stages will involve managing traffic via temporary lights and nighttime road closures.
Upcoming works on Barton Road (A603)
We’ll soon begin improvement works along the next section of Barton Road which will:
- Widen the shared-use path
- Provide better year-round drainage
- Improve safety with better separation between the path and road
- Introduce a slower speed limit for vehicle
The works stretch from the A603/M11 roundabout to just past the Barton Road lay-by. Construction will begin this summer and last for about 20 weeks.
To reduce disruption, the majority of work will happen overnight. Night-time road closures (8pm–6am) will be in place once works start, with the diversion route clearly signposted. The diversion will be available on our website, along with further updates shortly. The road will remain open during the day, with temporary traffic lights and a 30mph speed limit in place. A temporary off-road path is already in place for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists during the works.
We will be in touch with nearby properties and businesses once final details and dates are confirmed.
Comberton Greenway

Adams Road improvements
As part of the Comberton Greenway project, Adams Road (from Grange Road to Wilberforce Road) is set to see a range of upgrades designed to make the area safer and more welcoming for pedestrians and cyclists.
The plans include widening the pavements on both sides of the road, narrowing the carriageway to create a fairer, more balanced space whether people are walking, cycling or driving. The entire road and footways will be resurfaced, and with improved drainage there will be the creation of new planting areas. The signalised junction at Grange Road will also be upgraded with improved visibility for everyone and shorter crossing distances, creating a safer space.
Subject to final work arrangements, construction is expected to take around 24 weeks to complete with construction set to commence this summer.
Coton village enhancements
We are planning to improve key walking and cycling routes this summer in Coton village. This includes the footpath near the Plough Public House, the High Street/Cambridge Road junction, and the area outside Coton Primary School on Whitewell Way.
The improvements will feature upgraded street lighting, resurfaced footways and roads, and redesigned junctions. Raised crossings, similar to the new junction on Green End and South Street in Comberton, will be installed at the two key junctions and outside the school to slow traffic and improve safety. There will also be work to improve drainage, create new fencing, landscaping, and other road surface upgrades.
Horningsea Greenway

Horningsea village and Fen Ditton
We're pleased to share that improvement works in Horningsea and Fen Ditton are now complete.
These include new pedestrian crossings, narrower junctions to reduce crossing distances, improved street lighting, and safer, wider off-road paths. Traffic-calming measures have also been added to help reduce vehicle speeds, making it easier and safer for families to walk or cycle - especially for those on the school run to Fen Ditton Primary School.
In Horningsea, these changes open up safer access to popular walking routes, including the scenic paths to Quy and Lode. Both villages are now better connected to the planned Bottisham and Swaffham Greenways, providing future links to Cambridge and nearby communities.
The completion of these works marks an important milestone in the delivery of the greenways network as the first route to be delivered. With other improvements elsewhere on the network also underway, and more to come this summer, we continuing to deliver much needed works to improve accessibility and safety for Greater Cambridge residents.
Haslingfield Greenway
Progress on the Haslingfield Greenway is continuing with design work ongoing. We hope to be able to submit a planning application towards the end of this year following discussions with landowners.
Discussion and decision-making
Barton Greenway was discussed at our recent joint assembly meeting on Thursday 19 June.
Our Executive Board is due to meet next on Thursday 10 July and will include discussion of the Full Business Case put forward for Barton Greenway. The agenda for the upcoming meeting can be found here.
