Significant progress is being made on the construction of a new roundabout near Bartlow to improve access and safety along the A1307.

We began work on delivering a new roundabout and several road safety improvements to the Dean Road junction earlier this summer as part of phase one of our Cambridge South East Transport project.

The new roundabout will be delivered in four phases and is being built off-road to minimise disruption to people who travel along the A1307.

Work on phase three of the scheme – to connect the new roundabout to the A1307 – will begin later this month. This will mean we need to close the road in both directions between the Fourwentways roundabout and Haverhill for two weekends, starting tomorrow:

  • Saturday 30 September until Monday 2 October (6am - 6am)
  • Saturday 7 October until Monday 9 October (6am - 6am)

Temporary traffic signals will be installed between 9-12 October to complete the remaining carriageway surfacing and road marking. The A1307 will continue to be open to one way traffic overnight, but localised signed diversions of Bartlow Road North and South will be in place. A map of the diversion route can be found here.

Martin Meehan, project manager for the CSET1 scheme, said: “We apologise for any disruption this ongoing work may cause but, when complete, it will improve safety and create better links for people travelling along the A1307 and for those who cross this busy road at Bartlow on foot or bicycle.

“It is the latest in a raft of improvements we have been making along this key route as part of phase one of the Cambridge South East Transport scheme, which aims to improve people’s journeys to the south-east of the city.”

Autumn 2023 update

In the last 18 months, we've completed a series of improvements along the key A1307 route as part of phase one of the CSET project, including:

  • The expansion of the Babraham Road Park & Ride with 152 additional parking spaces, with work continuing to install solar panels to generate clean energy for the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
  • The delivery of a new signalised crossing at Hildersham which links into the Linton Greenway and the introduction of a reduced 40mph speed limit to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians.
  • Improved junctions, signals and street lighting at Linton Village College and Linton Meadows as part of the Linton Greenway. A new shared path has been created from Hildersham west to Linton Road in Abington.
  • New sections of the Greenway – linking Granham’s Road to Addenbrookes’ Hospital and the Babraham Road P&R, and onwards to the Copley Hill Business Park.
  • An eastbound buslane between Dalehead Foods and Linton Village College to provide faster and more reliable bus journeys.
