Cambridge South East Transport: phase 1

What is Phase 1?

Phase 1 looks at road safety, walking, cycling and bus priority along the A1307 between Haverhill and Cambridge.

A continuous shared-use path for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders from Cambridge to Linton will form part of the Linton Greenway.

Works also include road safety improvements at key junctions, as well as walking, cycling and horse riding improvements along the A1307.

Cambridge South East Transport: what we've delivered

Active travel crossing of A11 via improved footbridge and underpass

This scheme is closely connected with the proposals for a new busway and travel hub and will be built as part of the Phase 2 proposals.
  • Adding access ramps to the existing stepped footbridge over the A11 would allow use by cyclists and mobility-impaired users.
  • Approach routes would be upgraded to bridleway status, resurfaced and stud lighting provided.
  • Horse riders would be directed south to the existing underpass alongside the River Granta. This route is in the flood plain, but modelling indicates it is unaffected most of the year.
  • The existing bridge is too narrow for use by horses and cannot be widened.

Haverhill Road junction safety improvements

We are currently exploring alternative options for this junction that balance safety, accessibility, and ecological protection.

We originally planned to redesign the A1307 junction at Haverhill to improve road safety and create better active travel links. This design required lighting to meet safety standards.

Ecological assessments have since confirmed that local bat species are highly sensitive to light, meaning the proposed layout cannot be lit safely for road users without causing unacceptable environmental harm.
