A safer and better route for people walking, wheeling, cycling and, where appropriate, horse-riding between Horningsea, Fen Ditton and Cambridge.
This will be a better way to get to Fen Ditton Primary School, residential areas, businesses, the river and leisure or retail facilities in this part of Cambridge. Attractions on the route are the garden centre in Horningsea, and the popular walk to Quy and Lode starting just north of the village of Horningsea.
It will include convenient links to the Bottisham and Swaffham Greenways for onward travel into Cambridge and out to nearby villages and attractions such as Anglesey Abbey.
Off-road shared paths, safer crossings and quiet streets with reduced speed limits where the Greenway runs on the road will make it safer and easier to travel along. Vegetation will be cut back to make it easier to see vehicles and obstacles.
There will be easier-to-follow signs to guide people along the Horningsea Greenway route.
Route overview
The route starts at Horningsea village then continues along the Horningsea Road (B0147), over the A14, past the primary school and on to Fen Ditton High Street. From the High Street it follows the Wadloes path to Ditton Meadows where it joins up with the Bottisham Greenway and continues into Cambridge.

Read moreWhere we are
In November, we made great strides towards improving travel safety in Horningsea village and Fen Ditton. Traffic calming measures, including bolt-down islands, were installed in Horningsea, and new Belisha beacons were switched on in Fen Ditton. We also began upgrading streetlighting in both areas and installed new signs in Horningsea village.
We’re now focused on completing the work in Horningsea village in January 2025. This includes finishing road markings around the traffic calming measures and across the village, completing streetlighting improvements for both Horningsea village and Fen Ditton, and finalising signage installations. These finishing touches will mean most of the Horningsea greenway has been delivered, which is great news for those wanting to travel between Cambridge and Horningsea.
We would like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding as we work to deliver these improvements and ensure safer, more pleasant journeys for everyone.
