Barton Greenway

Safer, easier, greener journeys that connect you to the people and places that matter

Linking Barton with Cambridge and neighbouring villages through sustainable travel

Barton Greenway will link Barton with Cambridge and neighbouring villages with better paths, crossings and new landscaping to improve everyday journeys for local communities.

In Barton village, improvements include:

  • better drainage to keep roads and paths safe and usable
  • upgraded street lighting
  • traffic-calming features such as speed humps, raised junctions and a 20mph speed limit
  • resurfaced paths and roads
  • a new pedestrian crossing
  • wildflower and tree planting along School Lane and New Road.

On Barton Road (A603), improvements include:

  • widening the shared-use path for people walking, cycling and using mobility aids
  • improving drainage to prevent water pooling
  • creating clearer separation between the road and the path
  • introducing slower, safer speed limit for vehicles.

Project Status

  • Works on Barton Road started on Monday 11 August and will last for around 21 weeks. The road remains open during the day, with night-time closures (8pm–6am) and a signed diversion route in place each night.
  • Kings Grove / New Road – works are expected to last approximately six to seven weeks with multiway traffic lights
  • Comberton Road –works should last for approximately four to five weeks. We will use a number of traffic management types such as multiway traffic lights and a road closure. This will run the same time as the works on Kings Grove/New Road, meaning there will be two sets of traffic lights across late September. There will be three-way lights on Kings Grove/New Road and two-way lights on Comberton Road.
  • Working hours for both are 8am–6pm

The Barton Greenway has been through extensive public engagement since 2018, with the latest consultation held in late 2022. The route was approved by the GCP Executive Board in October 2020, following strong public support.

Decisions on whether and how to move ahead with GCP projects are made by the GCP Executive Board following consideration and discussion at the GCP Joint Assembly. In October 2020, the Executive Board approved the route of the Barton Greenway. This was based upon the consultation held in 2018 where 82% of the public supported the proposals to widen the existing path along Barton Road.

Community benefits

  • Safer routes for school journeys: upgraded paths will make it easier for children to travel to and from Barton Primary School.

  • Better local connections: the Greenway will link Barton with Burwash Manor, Comberton and beyond, creating traffic-free routes to key destinations.

  • A greener village centre: new landscaping, wildflower planting and improved lighting will enhance Barton High Street and surrounding areas, making them more attractive and accessible for all.
