Project Summary
The Greater Cambridge Partnership is investing in solutions to tackle current and future transport problems by offering better and more sustainable ways to make journeys by public transport, cycling and walking.
The Cambridge Eastern Access corridor provides the main access into the city from the east and consists of the A1134/A1303 Newmarket Road between Quy Interchange and Elizabeth Way and connects with the main Strategic Road Network at A14 Junction 35. Newmarket Road Park & Ride is located approximately 500m west of the junction with Airport Way and is accessed off the A1303.
It suffers considerably from congestion during peak times, particularly at the Cambridge end including Newmarket Road causing delays, disruption and worsening problems for an existing infrastructure that cannot support future growth.
As communities continue to grow in line with the area’s Local Plan, sustainable transport options will be vital to access work, study and other opportunities the city has to offer – whether using public transport, cycling or walking.
Cambridge Eastern Access Phase 1 will provide safer and better route for walking, cycling and public transport improvements on Newmarket Road and the preferred site for the relocated Park & Ride.
Newmarket Road provides access into Cambridge from the east, is a popular destination in its own right, accommodates the day-to-day journeys made by local residents and is a high frequency bus route. Newmarket Road suffers from substantial congestion particularly during peak travel times, provides a poor quality environment and unattractive infrastructure for people travelling on foot and by bicycle
The Newmarket Road improvement scheme is an ambitious and transformative project that combined with the other city-wide schemes is needed to tackle the challenges of today and the long-term challenges ahead. By providing the infrastructure needed to enable people to switch from private car to walking, cycling and public transport, improving air quality, quality of life, health and wellbeing by increasing levels of physical activity and supporting the urgent need to tackle the climate emergency, resulting in a cleaner and greener city for all
The Cambridge Eastern Access proposals includes transformational changes to Newmarket Road to provide high-quality footways, crossings, segregated cycle tracks, bus lanes and junction improvements. The proposals include relocating and expanding the Newmarket Road Park & Ride site.
The scheme aims to:
- Improve the green space on Newmarket Road
- Provide better connections by improving existing and providing new pedestrian crossings
- Encourage people to change to walking, cycling and public transport rather than using private cars
- Provide improved bus stop facilities and bus priority measures. Enable increased levels of walking and cycling by residents living along Newmarket Road
- Support the delivery of sustainable planned developments including Marleigh and Cambridge East (Cambridge Airport)
