Cambridge Eastern Access

Introduction

CEA Newmarket Road McDonalds roundabout aerial view

Cambridge Eastern Access (CEA) aims to make it easier, safer and more efficient for everyone to travel to and from Cambridge from the east.

We’re proposing more cycleways, bus lanes and better pavements along Newmarket Road. Phase one of CEA also includes moving the current park and ride site to a new travel hub just off Airport Way, with phase two proposals for a new busway through the current Cambridge Airport site.

Extensive public engagement and consultation has taken place on the proposals. Our board agreed to develop the proposals for a relocated travel hub on Newmarket Road ahead of submitting a planning application.

Upcoming Newmarket Road surveying work

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be carrying out investigation works along Newmarket Road to support the design of our Cambridge Eastern Access project, which aims to improve journeys to and from the city from the east.

From Monday 12 May we’ll be gathering detailed information, including the position and type of underground utilities, the layers of existing roads and pavements, and the ground and drainage conditions.

Works are planned at approximately 40 locations on or around Newmarket Road, between the bridge over the railway line and the BP garage. Contractors will be on site during the following times:

  • Monday 12 May to Wednesday 14 May (night works 8pm–5am)
  • Wednesday 14 May to Friday 23 May (9.30am-3.30pm)
  • Monday 2 June to Thursday 5 June (9.30am–3.30pm)

We’ll do everything we can to avoid any excess noise or disturbance while work is carried out. Temporary traffic signals will be in place for the safety for our workforce and for people walking, cycling or driving. Access for residents will be maintained.

There should be no blocking of access for any residents within the work areas. The works will only be temporary, and as work is completed, access will be reinstated.
