Following today’s (Wednesday, 30 September) Cambridge Independent, we wanted to provide an explanation around the Cambridge South East Transport scheme.
Unfortunately, we were not contacted before the paper was published and we would like to provide reassurance around the headline the busway ‘will cut off blue light access to hospitals’.
If the scheme is approved, blue-light emergency access to hospitals will be maintained throughout construction of the Cambridge South East Transport scheme and once it is in operation. We have worked closely with Cambridge University Hospitals to ensure emergency access will be protected at all times, and are committed to continue to do so.
A key aim of the Cambridge South East Transport scheme is to improve access to the Biomedical Campus for staff, patients and visitors, while reducing congestion on surrounding roads. By helping to tackle traffic congestion, the scheme will also support more reliable journeys for emergency vehicles.
The Objections and Statements of Case cited in the article were published last year, and significant progress has been made by the project team since then. That progress includes substantial dialogue with affected landowners and those negotiations are ongoing.
The Department for Transport has announced a public inquiry which is taking place from Tuesday 8 December 2026.
