Greenways update: April 2025

Published 07 May 2025

Welcome to our April 2025 newsletter.

We are publishing this update a little later than normal to allow the county council and combined authority elections to conclude. As a public body, there are clear rules covering what we can issue during any pre-election period.

We're bringing you the latest updates from across the greenways so you can see what improvements are happening near you and when works might take place.

Read on to learn more about:

  • Safer walkways and cycle ways following completed works on Cowley Road as part of the Waterbeach Greenway
  • Early works starting in Barton village to introduce traffic calming measures and safer crossings on the Barton Greenway
  • Forthcoming works on Adams Road to introduce England’s first cycle street as part of the Comberton Greenway
  • Finalising designs for Shepreth, Great Shelford and Stapleford ahead of works starting later this year on the Melbourn and Sawston Greenway

Waterbeach Greenway – Cowley Road improvements

April newsletter - Cowley Road 2

Work to create a new segregated cycle track and footway along the Cowley Road section of the Waterbeach Greenway is now complete. The shared path has been significantly widened to create a new 4-metre-wide cycleway, with space for people to walk and cycle in both directions. Pedestrians also benefit from a new raised crossing opposite the entrance to St John’s Innovation Park – giving walkers and cyclists priority crossing for the first time on this part of Cowley Road. These upgrades make it easier to reach Cambridge North Station, the Chisholm Trail, and Milton Road – improving connections for commuters, residents, and local businesses. We want to thank you for your patience as these changes were made.

Barton Greenway– Barton village safety improvements

April newsletter - Barton

Work to widen the footway, improve signage and install better streetlighting has begun on the junction of Comberton Road and New Road in Barton village as part of improvements to introduce safer crossings and traffic calming measures. A road closure and diversion route has been put in place that we actively encourage road users to follow. The diversion route will run from the junction of New Road/High Street. Road users will travel towards Comberton on the B1046 before taking South Street -> Royston Lane -> Cambridge Road. The high street in Barton village is also available for those not driving heavy goods vehicles.

To reassure residents, visitors and businesses, access to properties and shops are all still open and no premises are blocked. Signage is in place to guide people.

Over the course of the project, works will take place on New Road, Kings Grove, School Lane, High Street, and Comberton Road. These will include:

  • Improving drainage helping to keep the carriageway safe
  • Installing new features such as speed humps and raised table junctions to complement the extension to the 20mph speed limit throughout the village, to make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Resurfacing paths and roads to make it easier and more comfortable for those using them
  • A new zebra crossing to make crossings safer
  • Clearing overgrown vegetation to make walkways easier to navigate and enhancing the greenspace in the centre of the village

Comberton Greenway – Adams Road

April newsletter - Adams Rd

One of the main routes for cyclists heading into Cambridge is set to be transformed as works begin on Adams Road this spring as part of the Comberton Greenway. Already used by more than 3,000 cyclists daily, Adams Road will become England’s first Cycle Street, making the route safer for all users. Rain gardens will be planted along the roadside to help with drainage and enhance the streetscape, while pedestrians will benefit from wider pavements and cyclists will have priority over motor vehicles. This is a development which has been welcomed by local residents.

Before the works begin, we will send letters to local residents and place information signs on the street to inform current users of the upcoming works and necessary diversions. To keep up to date with the project and for further information, click the link below.

In addition to Adams Road, we will also progress works in Coton this summer, where junction improvements – including a raised table to slow down oncoming traffic – will make crossings safer for pedestrians and local residents.

Melbourn and Sawston greenways – Shepreth, Great Shelford and Stapleford

Following improvements from Meldreth Station to Station Road, we’re now focusing on preparing the Shepreth spur of the Melbourn Greenway for construction later this year, where work will create safer travel for everyone through traffic calming measures, wider footways and more accessible crossing points.

Later this year, designs to improve the link through Stapleford and Great Shelford will be completed to prepare for the construction of better paths for walking, cycling and wheeling through both villages. The link through Great Shelford and Stapleford forms an integral part of the Sawston Greenway and will provide stronger links to Cambridge and communities in neighbouring villages.
