Project Summary

Hills Road is a key route linking Cambridge city centre with the railway station, Addenbrooke’s and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

We intend to improve walking and cycling infrastructure between the Lensfield Road / Gonville Place junction and Hills Road Sixth Form College / Purbeck Road.

Key Benefits

  • Increase walking and cycling through improved active travel infrastructure
  • Enhance safety for people walking and cycling, including at signal‑controlled junctions
  • Maintain or improve the look and feel of the street
  • Maintain or reduce bus journey times, with better waiting areas and easier boarding
  • Reduce conflict between kerbside business activity and safe movement for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Support a shift from private car use to public and active travel
  • Provide safe, attractive connections to support Cambridge’s planned growth

2023 consultation
Two design options for Hills Road were consulted on in summer 2023. In January 2024, the GCP executive board agreed to progress the scheme, with further consultation required on proposals for the Lensfield Road junction.

Following the 2023 consultation, preliminary design work is now complete. The scheme will continue to be refined and may change as designs develop. We aim to share updated proposals with the public in later in 2026.
